When I got the game running it was at 1366x768 rez with very high quality and not a bug in sight. Man that felt good. Now I'm stuck again!
I got to the part of the game when you placing the orbs in the scrying room in order to see the different council members. Every time I try to place an orb (except for the wizard orb, which works) the game crashes to the desktop. This doesn't look like a part of the game I can skip.
Running Windows 7 64bit, newest version of divine divinity from gog, no save game editors.
I have tried running using software rendering at the lowest settings, and under directdraw, running under different compatibility modes or no compatibility modes. The game is run as administrator, I went and got my newest video drivers. I tried using RunFirst and setting the process affinity to one of processors. I'm not sure what the problem could be.

Thats a known bug in the game I'm suprised they didn't fix it with the latest 1.5 patch they made. Do you not have any earlier saves you could try to continue from?

I do have an earlier save, but will it make a difference or should I just not go to the scrying room yet?

Just load an earlier save and go back to the scrying room, no point doing a ton of other things first for it just to crash again.
It seems you have tried most every suggestion I would have.. . so . . . if it still crashes with the earlier save . . .
DD seems to be overly sensitive to resolutions. Instead of the 1366x768, use the config tool and try playing thru the scene in 800 x 600 ( I think that was the original res for the game). If you need to run 1366x768 make sure you have edited the config.div flie and entered that resolution. I would suggest using a res such as 1280 x 800 rather than 1366x768. 1280 x 1024 or 800 x 600 would more closely match the original graphics. You tired playing thru using d3d and directdraw I' m sure.
Two other suggestions if all else fails . . .
If you are running an AMD Dual Core CPU you might try the AMD Dual Core Optimizer as it helps with some graphics / timing problems on AMD systems. Do not use it for an Intel system.
Some folks have cured graphics slowdown on Win 7 64 systems by limiting the memory. It could possibly help you to get past this point as well. You would only do this while running the game and should make note of your original setting prior to trying this. Usually setting it at 3072 does the trick with 2048 the next setting to try. Set your memory back to your original setting after playing. See the attached image (image courtesy of Undesirable)

Got home from work and tried the earlier save. I had already tried playing at 800x600 and the lower rez with software rendering and with directdraw but I tried it again with no luck. Tried limiting the memory to 3048 and then 2048 when that didn't work. Unfortunately I'm running an intel processor. I honestly can't think of anything else to try. Darn. I really liked this game too! I hope that gog patches it so that everyone can play.

I'm sure you are running the latest version but look on the start screen in the lower right corner and make sure its V1.005A.
I have a save right before my guy has rung the gong but no easy way to get it to you. . . =(

Yes I've got the right version.. darn! XD Thank you for trying, I'll be open to suggestions/patches in the future.
I remember the old Divine Divinity game sometimes crashing. One fix was to turn audio acceleration all the way down using dxdiag. I don't know if this will have any effect for your crash.

My older linux box has a dual boot of windows xp. What I might do if I get desperate enough is install the game there, move my save games over and try to get past that part.
There are no sliders in my dxdiag. According to the internet there's either no way to turn off sound acceleration in Windows 7, or it is always turned off. Heh.

Unfortunatly vista and win7 removed that. I think they handle sound differently now but it means that games that trick works with won't work on win7 or vista.
Might be worth installing this on your xp machine anyway. As you can then try this trick on that machine if it still crashing. Should also help determine if the saves are corrupt or if its something to do with win7 or the machine win7 is on.

Ralackk: Came back this evening to see if the xp thing would work. Crashes at the same part even on xp, even with the different rendering engines and using the dxdiag acceleration trick. The XP machine is much older, not even a multicore processor on that one.
Reinstalled the game on the windows 7 box but kept the save games. Still crashing. I'm wondering if there might be something wrong with my save games. But there's not much I can do about that.

If thats the case it sounds like you've unfortunatly probably hit a bug with the game on that character at some point. You could try loading a even earlier save and hope for the best maybe working your way back to that point a little differently if possible.
If you haven't done so already you could contact gog support incase they can figure it out.
Edit: Just had a thought if you can upload your save somewhere I've got the game so I could test it out on my system as well. If the save is bugged it won't work but its worth a try I reckon.

Ralackk: On my linux box Wine will load up divine divinity without a hitch...and still crashes in the same spot. I'll find a place to upload my save. Thank you for your time :)
Edit: It actually compressed nicely to 6.3 mb. This is just after I killed the demoness.

I already restarted the game once from this point. I'm not sure what I am supposed to be avoiding! If I do play again, I might try and play from Win XP or my linux install all the way through, although I do like the laptop XD. The only thing I did that might be a little "odd"
*Spoiler*
is that instead of getting the thieves guild to help me break into the castle, I wandered the sewers until I found the entrance myself. On the way I found and killed a character called the executioner.

This won't break the game as I have done the same twice.
I think you have a corrupted save. Take a look at this post, it is a different problem altogether but it was fixed by copying a file from a previous save to a corrupted save. Check your saves for a similar problem . . . =)
