So I have that issue where Divine Divinity is running slow in w8. I have seen that some people have fixed this by running the configtool and fiddling with the settings. But every time I try to apply different settings it stops working and crashes. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I'm just trying to fix the running slow in windows 8 issue.

Is it the configuration program that crashes when you switch to Software mode, or the game?

Did you hit the reset button in the configuration program, try the test or just hit 'Apply & Close'? I assume so; there are not very many combinations of things to try, other than changing the resolution.

Did you try running the game in different compatibility modes, etc (right click on the div.exe program or a shortcut and select Properties).

I have run all the compatibility modes with no results. And as for the config tool I tried to switch it to software mode but and hit apply. Also reset and then tried applied. I think I rand the test but that worked fine, it is just when I hit apply does it crash.
Ok I fixed it somehow. I reinstalled it outside of program files then did the config tool to put it in software mode. Now it runs as smooth as can be.
Ran into the exact same problem in Windows 8 64bit.

Installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Divine Divinity and I edited the config.div file to the following:

// display width
width 1920

// display height
height 1200

// activate smooth mode
smooth 1

// show the intro movies
startup logo 0

// enable quickstart
quickstart "on"

// use compressed image lists
images compressed

// use flat file system
flat files

// enable/disable z-tunneling
ztunnel 1

// set the memory limit
memory limit 64

// enable/disable the use of bitmapped fonts
use8bitfont 1

// disables fog rendering
no fog

// set the color mode
rgb 565

// Select alpha bit
Alpha bit 0

Ran into problems with stuttering curser, and running the configtool.exe and setting it to software fixed it.

Thanks for the help!

How many of these settings are for their default values, I wonder? I'm a bit confused by all of the reported versions of this game in existence...when I run the config tool I get no option for software mode. In fact, when I run configtool I get no options for anything--it's only when the game resets that I am given a choice for resolution, but then nothing else. I've just been editing the config.div directly...

I also use 8888 instead of 565 for rgb mode....seems to work, although yesterday I had one humdinger of crash in Win8Pro that locked up the desktop solid--I could only get back to the desktop without a reboot by logging off (signing off) and then logging back in. That kind of hard crash is highly unusual in Win8...which generally handles program crashes with ease.

What version of the game do you have? (shown in the bottom right corner of the main window)
The original 1.005 GOG release should have an option in the config tool to select the resolution, but disabled the ability to change the rendering engine. The anthology version of the game (1.006) added back Software mode support (1.0063 with the music fix). If you downloaded DD after D2:DC was released on GOG you should have the more recent version.

Try running the configuration program as administrator.

It's 1.005A--I need to download the newer version, I know--just haven't gotten around to it. At the moment, I'm more interested in investigating the options available for 1.005A via the config.div file...I'm interested to know how many of those already listed above in this thread are default--so I'll know I don't have to add them in.

Thanks. I'm running Win8Pro x64 on a 6-core FX 6300 (Vishera) @1280x800 --do you have a compatibility mode you would suggest? Game seems to run with XP sp2 mode invoked--will even run with no compatibility mode, so maybe that's best. Right now I'm in the tinkering mood...;)

configtool won't display any values even with admin mode selected (I run nearly everything that way as it is.) As long as I can use config.div, though, it doesn't bother me. I just need a list of possible settings to experiment with.

display width / height - selectable

smooth 1 - default

// global contrast
contrast 1.000000

// global gamma
gamma 1.250000 - these two are added if you change the gamma in the graphics options

startup logo 0 - default for download version (disk version is enabled, value '1' )

quickstart "on" - default
images compressed - default
flat files - default
ztunnel 1 - default

memory limit 64 - I have a value of '32' in XP and 64 bit Win7

use8bitfont 1 - default
no fog - default

rgb 565 - default; listed in my 1.005 install, but not 1.0034 or 1.006

Alpha bit 0 - default, but not necessarily listed

Except for the music fix for version 1.006, there are not a lot of difference between the old GOG version and the current version (slightly better configuration program and multi-language support are in 1.006, and a few other minor things).

Thanks much, Raze! I can report, too, that 1.005A actually runs better under Win8Pro x64 with *no* compatibility selected--I run it in plain Win8, admin mode. Seems to stutter much less and run much smoother than under WinXP sp2/3 compatibility mode.

I did notice, however, that even when I write-protect the config.div file the game does replace it with a much smaller one with these entries:

// display width
width 1280

// display height
height 800

// activate smooth mode
smooth 1

// disables fog rendering
no fog

// set the color mode
rgb 565

This version of the game seems to want to let me change the resolution and nothing else (I selected 1280x800 because I have a 16:10 (8:5) aspect monitor.) Normally I run @ 1920x1200, but I think the characters are too small and 1280x800 maintains my 8:5 ratio while providing a decent on-screen character size.

Great game, though--fun to tinker with it!...;)

Edit: OK...lol...;) I reinstalled the game and now I get a much larger config.div file...like yours above--and thanks again for that! I try and set the display mode to a 32 bit depth (8888) but I gather 16-bits @ 565 is the most the engine will do, correct? (The rgb 8888 entry was removed by the game.)
