On D:OS, what the title says.

When we tried to play it said we had different versions of the game. I assumed this was because we had not patched the game to match one another. Since I had downloaded the game earlier I figured I needed to update with the patches, but when I tried to patch mine I received the error message, "This patch does not support your version of the game" as others have already posted about.

I guess I am in need of serious help with the patches and whether or not we can play cooperatively with Mac and Windows. I have Windows 8, btw.

In general, yes, however currently the PC version is at 1.0.132, while the Mac is 1.0.130. If GOG doesn't release the hotfix for Mac soon, both versions should be updated possibly this week, anyway (though not necessarily at the same time).

You can install the 1.0.130 patch, though, and skip the 1.0.130 hotfix. You would be able to play co-op then, but would experience the issues fixed by the hotfix (HP lost on loading saves, due to HP/Constitution bonuses on equipment not being applied properly, and the resistance cap applying to the zombie talent {making it useless}, potions and spell effects). Neither would be much of an issue at the start of the game, though.

What version of the game do you have? GOG periodically updates the main installer and drops the older patches. That is fine if you download them as they are released, but if you miss some, you may have to try to find them elsewhere, or re-download the full installer.

At the moment, if the most recent versions of the game are being used on Mac and PC, then you'll likely be unable to play co-op. I had this problem when trying to play the game with my wife when she was on Mac (v1.0.130) and I was on PC (v1.0.132). Her LAN server was greyed out and a message was displayed indicating that our versions were different. When I booted up my Mac, we were able to co-op just fine. So...a bit of a shame at the moment - hopefully we'll have a solution soon.
We were able to play after I uninstalled and re-installed the game on my PC and just did the first patch and not the hotfix. Now it says there is a newer version for mac so I assume I will be able to add the hotfix.

Regardless, thanks to both of you for the replies.
