He doesn't register as in combat so not only do enemies not target him, you can also select him whil the rest of the party is in turn-based combat and free roam/ free kill your enemies.

This is a known issue, which will be fixed in the full release, with companion characters that were dead on the ship during the encounter with Windego, at the start of the game.
