Hello,

I have recently downloaded Divinity OS2 and am having problems getting it to work on my laptop, the specs of which are as follows:

Lenovo V110
Intel Core i5-6200U 2.3GHz
4GB DDR4

I have tested the game on my main pc and it works fine but from Friday I wont have access to my main system for awhile.

What is happening

1. Yes, I do have a firewall installed and have no interest in turning it off, the same firewall is installed and configured exactly the same way on both my PC and Laptop and as i already stated, the game plays with no issues on my PC.

When I load the game and click create profile, I type in the name of the profile I wish to create and I get kicked back to desktop with the error message of "Failed to remove dir, C:/Users/%USERPROFILE%/Documents/Larian Studios/Divinity Original Sin 2/%PROFILENAME%". However, when I go into 'My Documents\Larian Studios\Divinity Original Sin 2\PlayerProfiles' the folder for the profile I have just asked it to create HAS been created but there is nothing inside it.

2. Loading the game directly from "'..\Divinity Original Sin 2\bin\EoCApp.exe'" by running it as an administrator

When I do this and I create a profile, I type the name of the profile and click create and absolutely nothing happens, I dont get kicked back out to the desktop but the profile is also not created, again however, if i go to 'My Documents\Larian Studios\Divinity Original Sin 2\PlayerProfiles' the folder for the profile HAS been created but again, has nothing inside it

3. Creating a profile on my PC and copying the files across

This appears to work at first but then I get into the character creation screen and make the char, then the game looks as if its loading but gives me the an error 612 and says that it failed to load the save file and upon accepting this error the game just closes itself.

4. Verifying the game files

I have done this multiple times and it appears to make no difference at all.

==============================

I have attempted almost everything in the list provided in a forum post I found where someone else was having the same issue with the thread title "game_crashes_on_create_profile"

I really need a solution for this as I will be away from my PC as of Friday and I wont be able to access it, so I will only have my laptop to play on and I would like to be able when it releases on Sept 14th

Also this is a completely fresh windows 10 install (literally less than an hour old).

Rhaom: error 612
Error 612 is a problem at the end of the save process, or loading into a new game.

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before starting the game?
In particular, a few people have had BitDefender block the game from being able to create files and folders. In that case, including the game executable and Larian Studios My Documents folder in BitDefender's trusted app and directory section will fix the problem.
Firewalls have also caused conflicts with the save/load process, or starting a new game.

Try creating a new Windows administrator user account, switch to that account and try starting the game from there, directly from the executable.

Try doing a clean boot and then test the game. Click Start, or hit WinKey-R, type in msconfig and hit enter; in the General tab, click Selective Startup, uncheck Load startup items (if required) and leave Load system services and Use original boot configuration options checked. Next, click on the Services tab, check the box to Hide all Microsoft services, then click the Disable All button (maybe make a note of which are currently enabled/disabled), then click OK and reboot the computer.
Run msconfig again to switch back to the normal boot configuration.
Its funny you should mention BitDefender because that is what I am using.

I have the eocapp.exe in my firewall rule to allow both inbound and outbound traffic on any network type but its not possible to add the my documents folder to the firewall as its not an application.

I have also added the eocapp.exe to my whitelist under "Advanced Threat Defense" and the same problem still occurs, on profile creation i get booted to the desktop with the following error:

"Failed to remove dir, C:/Users/%USERPROFILE%/Documents/Larian Studios/Divinity Original Sin 2/%PROFILENAME%"

EDIT:

For other users having issues with BitDefender

I have found the problem, there are 3 places that the application "..\Divinity Original Sin 2\bin\EoCApp.exe'" application needs to be added in order to allow it to modify the documents folder to create profiles

1) Firewall
2) Advanced Threat Defense - Ransomware Protection
3) Safe Files - Application Access

I have added a screenshot to show where exactly you need to go to add the application

Thanks for the update; I'll add the names of the specific locations in future references to BitDefender.

I have the same problem, but I still have not been able to launch the game. i tried some of the suggestions mentioned, but I've had no luck booting the game. it crashes on or before the profile menu screen. I ended up uninstalling my firewall with no success.

I'm running windows 10 on a laptop
intel core i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40GHz
16 gb ram
GeForce GTX 880M
Driver version 385.69
Direct3D API version 12

Please help with any suggestions.

William0885: it crashes on or before the profile menu screen.
Try manually installing the redistributables used by the game.

- Visual C++ Redist 2015 (update 3) [choose 64bit]
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53840

- .Net 3.5 [choose Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (Web Installer)]
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21

- the Microsoft Universal C Runtime, on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 (it is already part of Win 10) can be downloaded at the link below, or gotten through Windows update
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2999226

Try unplugging / disconnecting any any gamepads you may have, to get rid of one potential problem in the startup process.

Try browsing to the '..\Documents\Larian Studios' folder and deleting the 'Divinity Original Sin 2' subfolder.
This folder contains the saved games, configuration files and a level cache folder. Normally I would suggest renaming the folder for troubleshooting purposes, but if you don't have any saved games that isn't an issue.
Next, extract the replacement folder from the download below into your '..\Documents\Larian Studios' folder, and see if that will let you start the game.

The graphicSettings.lsx file is set to 1280x720 Windowed mode, Very Low quality preset, which you can change in the options (manually, or hit autodetect) if this gets the game to start.

If that doesn't help, try switching the game to run on the integrated graphics, rather than discrete. The HD 4600 wouldn't have great performance (and integrated graphics are not officially supported), but should be able to run the game.

If you check the Event Viewer, does that give an error code or 'Faulting Module' file name that might help identify the cause of the crash?
- click Start (or WinKey-R), then type "event viewer" into the search box. in Windows 10, 'event' should bring up 'View event logs'.
- after starting the Event Viewer, expand 'Windows Logs' in the left column and select 'Application'
- in the center column, look for a recent error (maybe sort by Date and Time) for the game
- check the information under the 'General' tab below the list of events, starting with "Faulting application name..."
I have the same problem, and no fixes seem to get me father than a few seconds past the profile creation. The already created profile and settings let me bypass the profile screen which it would crash at. But I still can't even move my mouse to click "Story' on the main menu.

The Event Viewer gives me this faulting error:

"Faulting application name: EoCApp.exe, version: 3.0.190.74, time stamp: 0x5aaffaf5
Faulting module name: nvwgf2umx.dll, version: 9.18.13.3165, time stamp: 0x52676b0b
Exception code: 0xc0000409
Fault offset: 0x00000000009939e2
Faulting process id: 0x20d8
Faulting application start time: 0x01d3ed4e8514faf3
Faulting application path: C:\GOG Games\DOS2\bin\EoCApp.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\nvwgf2umx.dll
Report Id: e066abeb-5941-11e8-b9f6-bc5ff436bcf0"

I don't quite know what this means besides the Exe is faulting somewhere just after startup.
I have a Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 Ti and run much more graphics intensive games and memory intensive games than this one.
I had the same problem even though I hadn't done anything special. But a hint given above about Bitdefender made me remember that I enabled Windows 10 Ransomware protection and that's what was preventing the app from creating the profile folders in the My Documents folder.

So I added an exception in the "Ransomware protection" settings of windows. And now everything is working fine.
