Does anyone know if this game has gamepad support of any kind? I tried using my xbone controller to no avail.

It should have controller support. It has joystick support, at least.
It is an older game, however, and presumably uses DirectInput instead of Xinput, so it is likely to have issues with Xinput-oriented devices such as an Xbone controller. You may want to try mapping buttons to keyboard keys instead.

I found the controller support as adequate, there are enough buttons on an Xbox 360/One gamepad to avoid mapping actions to triggers (see compatibility issues) entirely.

Try remapping in the options. Note that you have to double-click the value — Enter toggled fullscreen for me which only stretched the screen from 4:3 (Alt + Enter is the hotkey according to the game).
