Follow these instructions explicitly and it should run fine for you. I'm running Windows 7 64bit with a widescreen monitor. I hope it helps!
After your install, look for your desktop icon, then take it from below.
Right click disciples gold icon on desktop, click "properties" at the bottom, click on the Compatibility tab, place a check mark in "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" Windows 98/Windows Me, and place a check mark in Run this program as administrator, click "apply", then click the shortcut tab, click "open file location", double left click the file "Config". Make sure you have the box checked that says "Use DirectDraw (faster)".
