I am playing the Empire saga on easy. I have made it to the Alliance, or 2nd saga. As a rule in this game, or namely where I am at - is it better to just have 1 main attack force/group instead of several so one doesn't need to split the experience points so many ways? I know you still need rod planters and a spy or two - but for my main conquering force? I don't know alot about strategy games, but I know in HOMM 3 you need several heroes. Any advice appreciated!
The campaigns in the Disciples series are really geared towards you having just one primary hero. You'll still want a few rod planters, spies, and maybe one or two small forces to keep the enemy contained in the late game, but when it comes to the heavy lifting just sticking with one primary hero is the way to go.
That's what I was hoping - thanks
I agree with DarrkPhoenix. With the possible exception of 1 mission and any map where your capital is the center of the map, you just need 1 main hero.

The main reason for this is, at least on Hard difficulty, the enemy takes the strategy of constantly spewing out weak heroes and rod-planters that are all far more interested in conquering your cities and taking your mines than actually battling your main force. When they get very aggressive doing this, you need to either destroy their Capital (possible but not easy) or post a "Guard hero" right out front of each enemy Capital that will cut off any tentacles they send out.
