Common Windows issue (since WinXP actually). Something prevent games working. Security? Antiviruss, Windows DEP service, UAC service (set it to default and use adminrun - UAC pop-up should appear and block Desktop temporary).
So look ono DEP, UAC and another one Windwos thing. Go to Control Panel - Widnows features - Legacy components - Enable Legacy DirectPlay.
Download dxwebsetup.exe from Microsoft and install it (as admin). Windows do not update DX9 propely since its not supported by default. This little exe is anlittle updater for DirectX. it install nothing, just download what is somehow missing or outdated.
Do not install GOG Galaxy\Steam\etc and games to C:, root folders, programfiles(programdaata), non-latin (umlauts or cyriilic) symbols.
X:\Games\Steam(or GOG)\
X:\Games\SteamApps\common\
X:\Games\Game-name2\ (for GOG offline installers and any else).
User folder should look like C:\Users\username\ and not like .\Users\имяпользователя\ (cyrillic example, but again, some special non-latin symbols for germany, spanish and polish is also inapropriate).
Also, there is more troubled issue. GOG version come with GOGDX Wrapper. It shoudl fix how game working for Win8+. but many users report game crahed for them with that ddraw.dll wrapped file.
First, you still need fix security (turn off DEP but turn on UAC to dfault state), make sure every path's is correct.
Then reinstall game. For GOG Galaxy (reinstalled to D:\Games\GOGGalaxy\) - after downaloding use game verification. At least twice. Reinstalling game from clients is not verification. So better do both - reinstall game and anyway do verification. (*)
After that, there is shouldnt be any issue with ConfigEdit.exe and GOG's wrapper DXCFG.exe. Temporary rename _ddraw.dll file. Use 'admin run' on ConfigEdit. and game exe's. Set up everythng (make sure you press 'High' preset in game menu). Return to game folder and rename ddraw back. Start DXCFG.exe as admin and configure it.
If game in Program Files, all 3 exe' cannot work proeprly:
- game (cannot set ini-file also present in game folder and so been blocked by security apps\OS if it is in Program Files)
- ConfigEdit (like game exe its read and write Disciple.ini config file, Config exe is some basic settings)
- DXCFG exe cannot read and write dxcfg.ini file.
(*) better use offline installer's. Install games to X:\Games\Disciples-1(\2\ROTE)\. Then you can add them to GOG Galaxy library if you set this X:\Games\ fodler as Galaxy games fodler and also manually point games.
Sometimes offline even have more content than Galaxy build. Disciples 2 have missed some content in galaxy build for english version (polish are good). But this is long story - GOG still after decade have A LOT of missed content both for Disciples 2 and Discipels ROTE, as well as some minor UI issue with PL version never been seen for older PL versions.
