Is anyone else getting an unable to write to save file error at random points throughout the game.

I've played a whole two hours so far and have gotten it at least for more than three times.

Kinda disappointing considering this is a re-release. But maybe I'm just not doing it right.

Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT 1:
Additionally, I can't leave the first level of the church without getting an "unable to open save file" error and crashes the game.

I really enjoyed this game so far but this error is really getting in my way of playing the game.

Try reinstalling the game to another location. I find having games installed to C:/Users/[User Name]/Games works just fine. I had to start doing this for some other titles sold on GOG as for some unknown reason Windows didn't like allowing games to save in the default install location.
Yes, exiledalchemist may be correct in what your issue is being caused by. Newer versions of Windows (any since Vista onwards) utilise UAC and DEP and these can prevent changes being made to the files of programs within their installation folder. Older games often save within their installation folder, so if UAC or DEP is preventing the files from being changed then it would require that you run it elevated to adminstrator permissions.

A better solution is to just avoid the protected OS locations, such as C:\Program Files, and instead install to your own Games folder.

Personally, I use a second hard drive (as my primary drive is a smaller SSD that I just use for Windows and drivers), so my games go into E:\Games or similar.
No luck, I've installed the game twice on both the D: and C: drives and am still getting the same error.

I've installed it to a non-protected folder both times, and have run the game in both admin and non-admin mode.

I'm surprised that this issue is affecting such a small amount of users (so it seems) yet am simulataneously largely disappointed with this re-release, considering I've throughly enjoyed the StarCraft re-release.

At this point I'm regretting my purchase, as I own the original Diablo on CD-ROM, and have installed it on my windows vista, 7, and 10 PCs with no issues regarding saves, or really any compatibility issues.

Again, I'm not "ree-ing" I just want some help :/
Have you raised this with GOG support yet?
I facing the same problem as well. Does anyone has any solution to this problem?

Try using devilutionX, it works without being a security risk
I have been having a glitch with devilutionx. Most of the game runs, it seems. However, if I gain a level on my character and then go to a different area, the game crashes saying it cannot open the save file archive. This occurs only in single player. Attempting with using the 'new game' feature on a character to by-pass it.

And, sadly, my attempt did not work. :(

If you haven't already, you may want to report that on the game's github, here: https://github.com/diasurgical/devilutionX/issues
Attaching your save file to the report would be helpful.
