Team Gog,

First off, thank you for the re-release and work that has been put in this far.

Currently, players have to deal with a myriad of networking problems and work around a in order to be able to host, and In Some cases, even join games.

Would be really cool if we could just do the following:

1: Buy game
2:install
3: it works

Any plans to do this? If not can we plan on the release of in-depth troubleshooting procedures?
To be fair, most games on GOG don't come ready to play over multiplayer. This isn't really a GOG problem, per say. These older games don't play well with modern operating systems, and there's not much we can do about it.

The real problem, I think, is with the Operating System. It boggles my mind that we're in <the current year> and Windows still doesn't come with a built in VPN/LAN emulation system. I mean, seriously, how hard would it be to create a built-in network adapter with a simple interface that would allow you to run a game in "LAN Mode". Essentially Windows own Hamachi system.

It's hard for third parties to do this because A) they don't have full access to the Windows architecture, and B) third party stuff often conflicts with other Windows networking apps. A proprietary Windows VPN enabled LAN system would solve all these problems.

Short answer: no, I don't believe there will likely be an easy fix for multiplayer in Diablo or any other legacy game.

I can help you with Hamachi though. I've spent hours troubleshooting it and feel pretty good about getting it set-up and working.

Warcraft 3 community has been using a simple app to facilitate hosting of games for years. Warcraft uses the same ports and the same server as Diablo 1.

There is also an open source server available, so anyone can host their own server and configure it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PvPGN

All someone has to do is use that hosting app for Warcraft 3, modify it to host games for Diablo 1, and put it on a server.

Ports are arbitrary, you could configure an FTP server to run on port 6112 but it doesn't make it a good base for building a Diablo server. The Diablo and WarCraft 3 game server probably do not share much logic except for the Storm network abstraction, if it could be solved with a simple network repeater then a generic on would probably be as good a fit as one derived from a WarCraft 3 specific one.

On that note, the team at Diasurgical is working on dedicated Diablo 1 servers which should also prevent some of the rampant cheating and crash exploits.
Umm.. okay, but I never said that someone should make a new Diablo game server. Warcraft and Diablo don't use game servers, and I don't even want that - I like my characters stored locally. Someone should make a hosting bot, not a new server or a game server.

Ghost++ surely doesn't work as "a simple repeater". I don't care which port would a Diablo hostbot use or what app would you base it on, but W3 has a proven and working infrastructure for this very purpose and I'm pretty sure it's much closer to what you require than some generic app.

Can you help me with this? or point me to some helpful guides? A friend wants to play on this platform.
Check game root folder text and executable files. Any official web pages. Or just Google it (ipx udp ports).
Oh yeas, and of course you can play on GameRanger.

Like the others above, I recommmend just running with GameRanger if you are playing Vanilla Diablo. It's the easiest to setup. If you're running with mods though, you'll need something else.

Here's my Hamachi Guide.
