Old time Diablo1 Battlenet player here.
Are the issues that made Diablo1 multiplayer cheatfest back in 2000 still there, or had they been ironed out? From top of my head, the ability to duplicate items, to edit the mp characters stored on players own machine, and creation of items that shouldn't exist, like godly plates of whale. Blizzard never adressed these, are they present in gog version?
I'd gladly give the Diablo1 mp another go, if primary interaction with other players wouldn't be scanning them to see if they are cheaters...
