The best description I can come up with. This game is HORRENDOUS to play. If you are buying this to get a quality game that you want to explore and play legitimately, good god, run in fear. Don't kid yourself that you are "going to play a classic" and see what all the fuss was about. You will devolve into a ranting lunatic looking for a refund and how dare anyone sell you this tripe.

However, if you have sunk enough time into this game in the past to get a doctorate in astro-physics AND biomechanics... This is the best 10 bucks you will ever spend. I am completely lost on how to play, took me forever to find my spells and I kept trying to assign my second attack button! Was killed by fallen in the first room and realized "I didn't save" , what the hell?!?! Save!!??! Oh the memories. Currently desperately trying to figure out if I can highlight items on the ground.

I haven't dived into a GOG purchase quite like this in a long time. I would have screamed in rage by now for how bad this game is were it not for any other title. Diablo? Sweet monkey love, I love it to death. I cant wait to get back into it!

Never have understood people buying a 1996 classic game and expecting it to play as if it was developed in 2016....;) Also hard to understand why people complain about not knowing how to play a game when there's a *manual* in the same directory as the game executable. It's there, just waiting on you to read it--but instead you write a post on the GOG forum complaining about not knowing how to play the game. Go figure...;) But, glad you enjoy the game--try reading the manual, though. It's really there for a good reason.
If a person wants to see it but not play, that's the beauty of YouTube or another video service. :)

Answer to that is no. But you can fairly easily scan the ground just by sweeping the mouse around a bit. In most other games this would suck but given how big the cursor is versus the size of the screen, it really is not that terrible. It was much worse in later games that started to use "graphics" instead of just having legos everywhere. :-)

The help display that pops out with F1 is a pretty good way to get started.

But the basics, left click does most of the work, right click to use things in your inventory or cast spells, and shift + click if you want to stand still and attack.

It sounds super basic but then you combine that with enemy behavior and enemy inability to occupty the same space and suddenly there's a lot more depth. A doorway combined with shift + click means you can empty a full room by killing a single enemy at a time, and said enemy could possibly even be stun-locked if you have a fast attack speed.

The biggest problem I have with D1 is really how darn slow all the resupply is, particularly if you need to visit Adria, and how utterly frustrating it is to run out of Town Portal scrolls.
I was hoping the in-jokes on Diablo vs Diablo 2 would play better. I was wrong apparently. Or maybe no one read past the first paragraph? I resolve to be more concise in the future.
i liked Diablo 1 for what it is, but after playing D2 for years, i just can't get into it. D1 is just a much slower game(unless you do a speed run with tools), and the heavy reliance on magic spells in deeper parts of the dungeon, makes only the mage easy to use.

and even with the mage, i would still need to do a lot of "hit and run" unless i wanna waste all my mana potions in one go.

Lol? I'm assuming you've never played a high level rogue or warrior.

Yep.

I assume the guy you responded to doesn't realize that YOU get to assign skills, etc, to your character.

My rule of thumb for my warrior, early in the game, is to assign one point each to each skill as I level up, and the leftover one to magic, until magic is my highest skill level... and then adjust so that it's always a close tie for first or second, at all times.

I have no idea how to play the cleric character... but then again, I'm into the old hack-and-slash (ala "Rogue," as you mention).

Those are called stats. Why would I play an RPG and not know what stats are? WTF? And yes, I quit at around level 30ish so no high level rougues or warriors. Happy now, trollords?
