sserponi: As far as I understand, the game allows to set the desired video resolution but still upscale the original 800x600 SVGA graphics to the selected resolution.

On my system this seems to work ok.

If you have a full-hd monitor I can suggest to run it in window mode at 800x600 or 1024x768, in the way to be as much close to the original res as possible an get the best size/quality ratio.
RyzeMore or less a 1024x760 will use more than 1/4 of the full screen size, so it can be played without problems.

shaboo_de: Diablo is 640x480, not 800x600. Even Diablo 2 was 640x480 and received 800x600 resolution only with its add-on LoD.

Playing in a small window on a Full-HD screen is looking awkward.

Sad truth is, pixel graphic games are just not made for any hardware beyond their era, so either play them on vintage hardware or just let them rest in peace.
I can't the screen to do anything I select 1920 and I still just get a 640 square in the middle of my screen might as well not even have the option I don't get streched screen or anything Ryzen moble w Vega 8 graphics

FunkyFr3sh: I think blizzards anti-cheat won't allow the use of ddraw proxies in online games (aka the gog compatibility layer) hence why they made 2 versions. One which will probably not work too well on modern systems but is capable of playing online games and one that should run fine on 7/8/10 but can't be used online due to the anti-cheat in battle.net.

640x480 might not always be supported, hence why the gog updated version probably is scaling the game to a higher resolution (But the actual game still runs at 640x480).
This is not the case. First, there's no anti-cheat measure against the ddraw patch and I can connect to the new gateway with the ddraw patch without any issue.
Second, the classic version also uses a ddraw patch.
The only reason they made 2 versions is that the "improved" ddraw causes all texts in the battle.net UI to move off-screen, which makes the battle.net interface unusable in fullscreen mode and very annoying to use in the windowed mode.

Resolution also isn't an issue. You can still run the original Diablo 1 natively in Windows 7 and Windows 10 with some tweaks (terminating the explorer process for example), without any ddraw patch.

High-resolution support simply means that the game can run in whatever resolution your monitor/GPU can support (4K?), but it doesn't change the fact that this game was created in 1996, so there will be pixels and there will be 4:3 window.

Finally the Beelzebub mod that most people label as "HD mod" is no different from this release in terms of high-resolution support. It is in fact identical in that regard!

The difference is that Beelzebub changes two things:
The default zoom distance is more zoomed out, therefore the pixels look less pixel-y, because you're looking at them from afar. But they are still the same pixels as before, there are no remastered graphics involved, and you can check that by zooming back in. The default 4:3 renderer frame is changed into an adaptive one, which results in your screen not having black borders no matter which resolution you use.

Both of these changes are changes to the game code, and I'm not sure if they can be added simply as a patch, perhaps Mordor can enlighten us on that topic.

I don't know about your machine but the video driver for my win10 machine simply doesn't support 640x480x8 in exclusive mode, so the game will not run without directdraw emulation. Nor will it run without disabling DEP, which GoG have failed to address.

You may not be able to set your desktop to 640x480x8, but you can still run the game in compatibility mode. I did mention "some tweaks". There are even yt videos of people doing just that, without any ddraw emulation.

An issue with DEP under Win10 might be pretty annoying, but it doesn't have anything to do with resolution support.

With Intel integrated graphics, it simply will not work regardless of compatibility mode (or whether directdraw is initialized using the emulation guid) - if the cooperative level is set to exclusive, trying to set the display mode to 8bpp always returns DDERR_UNSUPPORTEDFORMAT.

Pressing ALT+F4 in-game after ending the explorer process is the correct terminology.

There IS a better option, however... this is what I have running Diablo (and Hellfire) on my disk-based installation (as opposed to the upgraded GoG version, which lacks Battle.net).

http://www.strangebytes.com/index.php/projects/1-diablo-1-windows-7-vista-patch

This will work on Win8 or Win10 as well, as what it is, is a replacement for "DirectDraw" rendering...

It allows you some fixes... unfortunately, it does NOT do proper aspect-ratio correction, so if your graphics card or monitor won't correct that for you, you'll get "stretched and distorted" display if in full-screen (so I play Hellfire in a window using this fix). It says it fixes that, but at least for me, I get stretching.

It remains my preferred fix, overall... mainly due to Battle.net removal (not that I really use that)... but GoG's aspect-ratio correction has made their version more playable, most notably in SP mode.

Say what you want, bubs. I'm running diablo with the HD Beelzebub mod and it looks amazing. To go fullscreen create a character, re load the character and go into the video options. It's as simple as that.

I was having trouble getting out of SVGA classic mode. Just got this game a few hours ago.. I'm running offline version.. No GOG API.. This HD Beezlighbulb mod hooked me up.. Git it here:

https://diablo-hd-belzebub.en.uptodown.com/windows/download

I was having a problem with screen size. Settings would jump it off boarder to the monitor.. Sometimes making adjustments in the menu hard because the letters and option were off screen.. Went fullscreen : OFF and that helped.. Then went to the .exe properties, compatibility mode. (Windows 7 Ultra is the OS) And check box'd Disable display setttings on high DPI settings.. This corrected all issues for me.. Changed to fullscreen: ON and went all the way to 1920x1080. Full zoom out..(You can adjust zoom with mouse scroll with this mod) Also, More characters and difficulties.. Looks flippin' AMAZING.. I'm in town.. I just got this going.. It's 8 PM I got smoke.. That music is going.. Got the GAMMA dialed to my liking.. Thanks for saying something about this mod.. I 'm extremely happy.. This is bad ass.
If you are interested in a version where the game play more accurately matches the original you might also want to checkout https://github.com/diasurgical/devilutionX/releases

High resolution, smoother animations, a lot of classes, and crazy build diversity is provided by The Hell 2 mod:
https://www.patreon.com/thmod
And here we go again with all the different mods.

TL;DR:
GOG version - original diablo
Belzebub / HD mod / HD Belzebub / other names - heavily modded, much closer to Diablo 2, no multiplayer
Tchernobog - heavily modded, same as Belzebub, but for multiplayer
DevilutionX - based on original diablo, only slightly modded, much closer to Diablo 1
The Hell 2 - even more heavily modded, basically a remake at this point. Think Diablo 2 and MedianXL.

Realpsojed: DevilutionX - based on original diablo, only slightly modded, much closer to Diablo 1
And, of the ones listed, the only one which is cross-platform (e.g. Linux, Android, 3DS) and open source (intentionally and perpetually, not just a source code "leak").
It's by far not a complete list of mods, but one is missing here among the modern mods:
Diablo+ - comparatively slim mod with a lot of QoL features for Diablo 1.
In our experience it displays one important advantage over DevilutionX (at least pre-1.3.0) because games don't crash in multiplayer when you have a bad internet connection.

Could you elaborate on that, does it actually crash or simply disconnect?
