Thiev: That error suggests something went wrong during installation and one of registry keys is either not set or not read properly.
As a quick workaround, try copying diabdat.mpq from root folder to DX folder.

The key in question:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node*\Blizzard Entertainment\Archives\DiabloCD
should point to the game installation folder.

*on x64 machines
You should really add this in some readme shipped with the game....

On netbook\tablet without cd-rom some old games can ask CD even DRM-free. Better always have some virtual drive(s).

tanukisuit: I've had to use the HD Bezelbub hack to run this old game on my computer but stupidly enough they tweaked it added some weirdness to it and hacked it up a bit so it's not the same game so this real release here is appealing.
Have you tried DevilutionX? It adds modern os support without changing the gameplay. It also doesn't make use of the registry so won't conflict with previous installations.

I've been unable to play in anyother version besides classic, I saw the answer that told me to put "diabdat.mqp" into the dx folder but it was already in there and im still reciving the same error code. I don't know what to do.

Uninstall and reinstall the game. Diatbat.map and other CD files will be installed whereas originally they weren't.

Surely he needs your help after almost 2 YEARS. + you can't even write "diabdat.mpq" ...
