How does it run? Is it playable?

If you are purist you will find:
The gog version does not run well on wine for linux, the game asks for the cd even if the data is present on the folder if you get to fix that the game is mostly playable whit BIG problem, the main menu turns black after blizzard logo you need to create character or load game in a black screen... But after that the game runs fine
Another solution , is use DevilitionX
you can use the linux native version or the windows version on wine (it runs fine too)

To play Diablo on Ubuntu, you might want to give a try to ./play.it.
This automates the installation of Diablo with DevilutionX, integrating it nicely with your environment.
The only downside is Hellfire not being supported yet.
