I am not good at this game. How do I get back to town from level 1? I am trying to find the stairs up but only find the stairs down.

Um, level 1 is the first level, use the stairs you entered it from. They are already on your map since that's where you started. We can't tell you more then that since level are randomly generated, so short of you sharing your save or a picture of the map we can't know where it is.

I'm pretty new to Diablo 1, is there a way to teleport from level 2 or 3 to town? It pretty annoying going back through all the levels, just to heal myself.

Yep, the Town Portal spell, which can be found as scrolls (single use, no mana required), books (you learn the spell, if your magic stat is high enough at the time, then use your mana to cast it) or staves (you equip the staff and use one of its charges to cast the spell, again no mana required).
