After pressing install button, a popup with "Runtime Error (at 73:462)"

Then "Runtime Error (at 211:814) Out of Global Vars range."

then "Invalid Opcode."

Then installer says "Diablo + Hellfire was installed successfully"

Then i try to run the game, top option runs the cinematic, but the main menu goes black.

(classic) mode asks me to inster the CD to play

Hellfire runs the cinematic then the main menu goes black.

on both top and hellfire options, i can mouse over buttons to press with an audio sound and activate them, but no graphics.

Installed from offline installer file size 850.1 mb

downloaded twice, same file size.

anyone have an idea i should be looking into to fix this?

after blindly navigating the menu i did manage to load up tristram, as a wizzard somehow. i saved a game in town, but now i can't see which line i press enter on to load my character.

Ubuntu 16.04 and Wine 1.6.2 are both very old, and you should upgrade.

Failure to draw the menu screens is a known issue for Diablo under Wine, and probably applies to Hellfire as well. Sound plays, and you can navigate by sound if you know the layout of the menus. Once you are in game, the display should be fine.

guess wine still has this old gap. I even dug out my old 1.04 diablo disc to try on wine. same black menu screen.

Windows 7 and 10 seem to work right for my desktops, guess if i want to play it on a laptop, i need to us my windows one.
or just use
https://github.com/diasurgical/devilutionX
it runs natively on linux so no need for wine

Even on windows the menu isn't rendered correctly (though not fully black). Yeah the issue still exists in latest wine and some versions won't even run diablo at all.

Regarding Hellfire, we are mostly there with having it as part of devilutionX, but had to take a couple of months break because of life.
