You need IPX wrapper to play via IPX, because today's systems do not use IPX protocols. You could install them manually on your network adapter on older Windows, but using the wrapper is simpler. It's a basic part of the GOG release.
You need Hamachi in order to play through the internet. Unless you and your friends rock a dial-up modem, or play via a serial cable (highly unlikely) you can play via LAN or via Hamachi.
The only other option is Battle.net, which is seriously broken and won't let you join other people's games (not host, join!) unless you have an open port, which is utter nonsense and was never required in previous iterations of Battle.net.
