I just received the game as gift.

I thought there were more difference between old and new diablo (a portal, run in town, new merchant inventory and more...) but didn't see those. I am not even sure that the game is applying the best video options.

Slightly better video scaling and some hacks for better Windows 10 comparability, other then that its identical to the original.

I really thought I saw new features. Perhaps it has been removed.

Sounds like maybe you're thinking of DIablo II where you do have a portal in town, run/walk toggle, vault storage and new merchants etc

the change log made it sound like there where changes, but it wasn't specific. Looking at the program it is obvious that they didn't have access to the source and all fixes are hacks that you can find on various forums. I'm currently working on a project to recreate the source and add some improvements and bug fixes. So fare we have the game running properly on modern platforms and with modern network support (but no Battle.net), but further improvements are still being worked on.

I just started playing on battle.net. It does work you need to open ports on your router modem and firewall. There are instructions on this site. Come play with us on bnet. Legit pvm is back.

They're basically the same thing, except for two things. Classic works best in older systems while having Battle.Net support. You can even join LAN games hosted by each version.
