The Hell 2 mod is a massive total overhaul project for Diablo 1, aimed at providing more variativity and novelty in gameplay.

It's been in development for 16 years, since 2006. Developed by group of people (TH team).

In 2019 there was a release of version 1.0000, which still had some problems. Since then we worked hard, every day, for almost 3 more years. Listened to reports, fixed and improved everything possible.

The mod now has a lot more options and convenience features. Greatly improved balance, stability, performance, gained much in content, level of gameplay variativity increased just.. astronomically (because of the Kaleidoscope system that allows creating almost infinite builds).

Main areas of improvement are:

1. better balance (used to have typical early stage problems like hard start and too easy late game)

2. improved handling of higher resolutions (up to 4K), zoom feature reintroduced, there were several iterations of motion interpolation (up to 10,000 fps) that makes all animations look smooth (not just in comparison to original game but compared to earlier versions of TH2 mod), additional visual filters available now (vignette, bloom, etc.)

3. visual windows for trading and stash

4. restored quests from Diablo 1 that never saw the light of day, plus they are randomized: there are variations of maps, they are not the same all the time

5. much work went into sound design which increased the immersion (improved and randomized effects of casting spells, them hitting targets, monster hit and die sounds, player and monster walk sounds that depend on the terrain)

6. more options to configure the whole thing to your liking

7. new item and character gameplay systems introduced: enchanting of items, socketing, synergies, gamechangers, traits

8. introduction of new character build types and gameplay mechanics (throwing knives and mallets, elemental and kinetic auras, etc.)

9. adjusted and expanded monster behaviors, new types and subtypes of monsters

10. special monster effects (curse fields) that affect players

11. 4 new game modes: Soft Iron, Speedrun, Easy mode and Hard mode

12. more unique and set items (counting ~2000 right now, but more being added every week)

13. greatly improved multiplayer stability and sync between players (quality PvP expected this year)

14. new system of adjustable hotkeys for spells

...and really a myriad improvements that are not humanly possible to remember and list in one post like this. I can just say that changelog for TH2 mod is bigger than Diablo1 executable file in size (and it's .txt).

I'm confused. I though 1.2000 already came out in the start of April? Also do the versions between 1.0 and 1.2000 not count as releases?
releases have a testing period, and it often helps finding and fixing bugs before they reach public state.

2000s epoch reached a stability phase on release of v1.2009

it's being developed in 2 main stages: addition of content and features, then fixing & polishing

0.xxxx era was pre-release. 1.xxxx is a released state. numbers after the first point are just numbers. i thought if new build is released every week, we got some 10k weeks ahead of us, and people dont last that long. so, that number just represents approximate progress made.
