Hello, i just got D1 and want to know which would be the best way to play HD multiplayer game (I just want to play with a friend). It is posible to do this with the game options? or need to download a mod?

I know there are many threads about this topics but i end more confuded than at the start, hehe.

For semi obvious reasons I would recommend DevilutionX, it should fit your needs perfectly. There will be new releases this week that brings some nice improvements also.

For multiplayer all you need is for the host to open port 6112 and for the other players to know the ip of the host.

It's also possible to do this with the GoG version but it's a bit more cumbersome and the frame rate is locked at 20fps and a couple of things have been disabled compared to the original. There are also other mods but they substantially change the game play so unless that is what you are after I wouldn't recommend them.

I was reading a little but the multiplayer thing looks a little complicated, i will try this method and see how it goes.

I would also want to know which is the best way to have multiple mods (running them in an independent way, i don't want to run one game with multiple mods). In D2 only needed to change the name of the install folder and install the game again but don't know how it is with this one.

Well it really is very simple, the prerequisite is that the clients can reach the host via TCP on port 6112, this can either be done by:
a: Being on the same LAN or VPN
b: Set up port-forwardning on the host's router. For how to setup port-forwardning for your specific router you need to consult your router manual.

Then follow these steps to host and join the game:
Host:
Multi player -> Client Server (TCP) -> Pick hero -> create Game -> pick password

Client:
Multi player -> Client Server (TCP) -> Pick hero -> Enter IP -> enter host ip -> enter host password

For the normal GOG version the steps are mostly the same except it's UDP instead of TCP and there are several extra steps that need to be performed, so i'm not really going to go in to that.
