I'm currently playing Diablo for the first time using DevilutionX and having a great time. I'm trying to play the game as close to what it was like playing it back in the day as possible, and DevilutionX seems to allow for that for the most part. Though, I've read criticisms of the port allegedly deviating more and more from that, without any actual information to back up the claim.

From what I've seen, most changes compared to the original, apart from clear bug fixes, are toggleable in the menu, with few key exceptions. These exceptions include "Holding mouse button to keep attacking" and the stash at the barmaid. The stash seemed a bit overkill to me, but on the other hand I guess it mostly just streamlines what was mostly possible before by littering the town with all your valuables. Although, I'm less sure about the ability to access the stash with other characters.

Are there other changes from the original game that can't be toggled? Or does it boil down to fixed bugs that some veteran players still consider integral "features", originally intended by the developers or not?

The features that we do not provide toggles for are thing we consider the play to simply be able to avoid (and bug fixes) in game if not desired. Sharing equipment between heroes where already possible through various means (an extra hero in multiplayer, world stone in single player, trainers or plugins).

It's also not possible to turn off the unlocked refresh rate so things will appear smoother then the original capped 20fps.

There are some minor tweaks to the UI to allow for multiple languages and some values have been changed to match the actual values the game uses rather then loos approximations (sometimes very loos).

As of 1.4.0 it's also no longer possible to switch to the original checkered transparency mode, instead blended is always used.

Thanks for the swift and through explanation! In this case I'm very fine with what changes you've made :) Although, personally, in the case of transparency I'd actually prefer an option to retain the original look. So, generally, I'm all for the approach of keeping as many changes toggleable as possible :)
Anyway, thanks for sharing all the great work!

On a side note, I recently posted on Reddit about the ability to keep the mouse cursor on screen while moving with a control stick, possibly even using WASD for movement. Can you comment on that, too?

WASD movment shold be possible by the time 1.5.0 lands.

The old transparancy rendering was taken out to so that we woudn't have to maintain two render paths. But 1.6.0 we hope to also have better lighting but that will stay optional as we need to keep the SW render for low end devices.
Thanks for all the information!

I've since completed Diablo 1 for the first time and it was a lot of fun. Despite wanting the original experience, I was actually very fond of the stash at the barmaid, as I would've been one of the players to keep dozens of items littered across town.

But, when I started a new character, I was rather disappointed that there was no way around using the gold my first character gained. It definitely felt like cheating having access to all of that, including the equipment, so easily. So, just to add some feedback regarding this feature, I'd really appreciate if there was an option to disable sharing of the stash between characters :)

Anyway, thanks again for your help and your involvement in this great project! Cheers!

you could swap the stash.sv/hsv between runs
