I never bought D1 online before. My itch to play it is now growing, and I just read that D1 battle.net was revived this January.

I read you can buy the game on your Battle.net account (which I guess integrates the online MP). I personally wouldn't mind playing some Hellfire as well, and generally like to have as many options available with my purchase as possible.

Can someone with the GOG version confirm whether or not you can play on battle.net?
Thanks!

Nothing has changed there; the only news is that they started selling it there as well. However, this has no effect on multiplayer, as it's the same old version and there are no changes to the server. In fact, the only way to play it in multiplayer is to configure it to use the server used by GOG by default. Additionally, it has problems running on modern Windows, as it includes fewer workarounds than the GOG version. Overall, it's better to buy it from GOG.

Both the Battle.net and GOG packages include Hellfire, but neither supports Hellfire Multiplayer. However, you can still play multiplayer using DevilutionX, which also incorporates all the bug fixes from Diablo into Hellfire.

Excellent reply! Appreciated :)
Velbekomme
Interesting stuff to read here. But I still can't play at battle.net with my gog version of Diablo Hellfire. Did I understand that correctly? You can't play Diablo at battle.net anyway because it (seems) it isn't supported anmyore or did I get that wrong?
regards

Hellfire never had battle.net support. Use DevilutionX if you want to play Hellfire online.
DevilutionX works suprisingly good imho (it lacks sometimes ...) but I still haven't found an online game to participate in for both versions of the game for different reasons.

I still can't connect to the battle.net with the original Diablo game. I start the game through GOG Galaxy, Multplayer, Battle.net, we have to upgrade, OK, upgrade, Display switches two time, I am back on my desktop with Galaxy and an messages that the updater doesn't need to be run and the game would be restarted but I am still stuck at my GOG Galaxy desktop. Saying no to the update turns back to the multiplayer menu in the game.
I don't know what else to try.

On our Discord you can see see a list of afctive games, it's usually lower during summer. But you can also try and cordinate a game with others.

The server asks you to upgrade when it does not recodnize the game signature, but 1.09 (which is the version shipped by GOG) is the latest so that's why the actual update bails. This can be an issue with the server and so you probably can't do anything about it.
Reinstall GOG build or verify files for GOG-Galaxy build. There should be no update prompt in Bnet. Chose Diablo non-Hellfire non-Enhanced variant in GOGs Diablo Launcher.
Trying access Bnet with wrong variant, game files corruption, removing Win REGEDIT game entries can lead to update prompt which lead to game files corruption. For Registry issue it is nowadays instead of old 4 servers there is one Global, but by default game restore original 4 servers gateways when cant find Global gateway entry in Registry (whatever reason of Bnet section unavailability). Same for Wc2.

Hellfire have no MP, so as suggested above to get more content in MP use uptodate fanmade version. Maybe still verify the files - just in case (btw Galaxy no more report which files it did download and client always redownload something, including install script files to reinstall game and register it in Win Registry, making Global server reappear in Bnet).
(Non-/Admin rights can be an issue cause it is affect both files availability and Win Registry availability - DevilutionX solve this by more properly handle storing the configuration)(each Blizzard games still use many folders and both HKLM/HKCU registry sections, which is Ms fault partially, partially Blizzard themselves, too much entries in Registry).

hellfire does have multiplayer but, it is limited to lan, serial and modem. i actually used to play it with somebody. i ended up traumatised however, because i got sick. multiplayer is stable however, though not running through battle.net. i will however test the battle.net version when i buy that. i am waiting for a discount.
Don't bother it's the same, it doesn't have integrations with the new battle.net or other updates if that's what you are hoping. Check there forums, it is even less compatible with modern computers then the GOG release as they didn't include an upscaler or update the server signature check.

Briefly skimmed the thread, but if you're running the GOG version instead of the base version, it won't connect to b.net at all.

The minor QOL fixes in Diablo that GOG implemented are excluded from b.net, in other words. There are two versions on the GOG version.

Take care,
