Hi community here;

i have an old CD-copy of diablo 1 and im not so interested in the new modern version with higher resolution, but in the possibility of multiplayer i am. Is it possible to play on the battlenet with my older copy, or is it a different battlenet-platform as the original? Since some years its impossible to connect to the original battlenet and blizzard wasnt maintaining it anymore in the past and you had always the "Port-Issue" with 6112-6119.

If this isnt possible, my next question would be, if you can transfer your old character-file into the new diablo copy? I want to play my old char with his gear on multiplayer.

thx
On the first part of the question, it should be possible to change the gateway, however I do not know if battle.net makes some kind of check in the background for this version (however i doubt it).

In regards to the other question, if you still have the saves you can just copy the

Multi_#.sv
Single_#.sv

files over and it should work without issues. I'm able to use my old saves that i had stored on a usb.
I did not try my old diablo on modern computers, but I played already with it on a pentium dualcore in 2010 on battle.net and it worked at this period. But I never try again since.

After the general channel used by gog is not the same and you will perhaps not be able to join this channel, if it is reserved to diablo gog edition users. So you must reinstall your diablo, find someone here with a gog edition to make some tests and perhaps, you will be able to play with diablo gog edition users.

I tried this last night, updated registry to connect to the "new" battle.net host the GOG release uses and.....
it downloaded a patch after connecting to battle.net, and failed to apply it.

I'm trying to figure out what files are different, because it *should* work with an original copy!

If anyone can shed some light on this, we can get a patch going for previous owners to enjoy the game again online.

did you copy BATTLE.snp, bncache.dat, BNUpdate.exe from GOG's Diablo folder? you need these files in addition to the registry edit.
Even the ports 6112-6119 i cant open anymore. I opened it at my router + firewall and it isnt working. Always getting the same error-message. I guess its a server-problem, because Blizzard didnt do anything about it in the last years. Diablo 1 was nearly dead at 2018. Even Tristr.am was not available anymore. The whole community was away. Never exepected, that diablo 1 would be playable in multiplayer anymore, but now with GOG i had a new hope, that it maybe could work on a modern battlenet, but still im frustrated. :(

I actually did not do that. I got it working and connected to battle.net by doing the following:
- Found patch 109b and applied it to the fresh install (this is NOT on blizzards website)
- used regedit to set the battle.net server to the gog release battle.net server (it's possible the 109b patch sets this, but I had an extra server in my list that patches cleared out)
- connected to bnet, it crashed about battle.snp (this removed my extra battle.net server from registry)
- restarted diablo and connected to bnet fine

Getting the original CD *should not* require any files from the GOG release. However, using the original disk makes load times be longer...by a bit. This was mostly just an exercise for me to get it working!

i hosted a game fine, (i suspect that even tho i am on battle.net and matching versions, that people can't join, as i was unable to join any in progress games (it said latency was too high)

Edit:
having both copies installed (GOG and CD Original) also breaks BNUpdate, as connecting to bnet prompts an update + patch and that fails when you have both installed.

Additionally, when the CD version got on battle.net it did not show bandwidth colors in chat for anyone, myself included

1.09b update (drtl109b.exe) will install to whatever location is pointed in DiabloInstall and DiabloInstallExe of the following registry (for 64-bit Windows): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Blizzard Entertainment\Archives\

sometimes if you have multiple Diablo installations, may need to update that location otherwise it won't update. also the update patch needs admin elevation.

if the update program says it does not need to be run, usually means you're already on the same version or latest.

yeah you are right, it does not need these files from GOG. some games have high latency, but i was able to join one with my retail version without any files from GOG.

What works for me 50% of the time is to put the router into DMZ mode. But I have to redo that every second or third time and restart the game. But it does work for me.
