How to Install Deus Ex: Revision mod on a Mac with PortingKit

While installing Deus Ex GOTY using the PortingKit app to create a Wine package on macOS has worked for awhile now, getting mods installed and working has been a hit or miss experience. PortingKit actually makes it fairly simple to run mod installers in Wine, but not all of them will work as well (or perhaps not at all) as they do in native Windows.

Since GOG officially makes Deus Ex: Revision (patch v1.4.0.1) mod available as a free download if you own the GOG version of Deus Ex GOTY (which requires some tweaking to run properly on Mac), I decided after completing the classic game that I'd try to install Revision mod as well. And as far I can tell, Revision runs fairly stably, with all the modified skins/maps and game options working properly.

** Important: running the Deus Ex: Revision mod under macOS, the game may freeze or crash unexpectedly - it is recommended to save your game fairly frequently so you don't lose too much progress should this occur. My experience is that crashes tend to happen during the map changes or certain event cues (and it is not always obvious where a map-transition point will occur in this game) but can happen during routine gameplay as well. **

* Also note that I've not tried to run this game in multiplayer mode, so I have no idea if that's even possible using this method.

For this installation, this is the version of both Deus Ex and the Revision mod downloads available on GOG as of this writing:

- Deus Ex GOTY edition installer for Windows (manual installation):
setup_deus_ex_goty_1.112fm(revision_1.4.0.2)_(26650).exe

- Deus Ex: Revision mod installer and files for Windows (manual installation):
setup_deus_ex_revision_1.112fm(revision_1.4.0.2)_(26650).exe
setup_deus_ex_revision_1.112fm(revision_1.4.0.2)_(26650).bin

The version of PortingKit used for this how-to is Version 2.9 (2.9.613).

[Installed system: 15" MBP late-2013, 2.6 i7, 16GB, w/o DG, macOS High Sierra 10.13.6]

-- Install Deus Ex GOTY --
01. Download the game and mod files and download or update PortingKit.
02. Run PortingKit, then click on the "Library" icon at the top of the window, select "Server" from the left side toggle; then in the Search box type "Deus Ex" -- the left sidebar window will filter down and you should see "Deus Ex" as an option -- select "Deus Ex". The main window will populate with information about the game and the install process.
03. Underneath the game title near the top of the window, you should see menu selections "PLAY" and "MORE" - click on "MORE" and in the dropdown select "Advanced Installation". Follow the prompts to select GOG and allow the WSI to download...
04. Advanced Settings -- select Engine: WS9WineCX15.3.1
05. Advanced Settings -- select Window System: Mac driver
06. Advanced Settings -- no dependencies (don't select any)
07. Allow the installer to run, ignore any pop up error messages that show up at the end. You should get a message that the game was installed successfully.

-- Deus Ex First-Time Configuration --
08. in PortingKit click on "PLAY" [alternatively you can navigate to the location the game was installed and double-click on it.]
09. A window labelled Deus Ex First-Time Configuration should appear on screen.
10. Select "Direct3D support" from the list of options, then click "Next" through the following screens until you come to a final screen with a button labelled "Run!"
11. Click "Run!" and the game should launch full-screen, changing (lower) screen resolution. Allow the game to run until the Deus Ex title screen appears.
12. Type the "esc" key on your keyboard to bring up the main game menu.
13. Click "Exit" to quit the game.

-- Install Deus Ex Revision --
14. In PortingKit, click on "Local" from the toggle above the sidebar, then select "Deus Ex" from the sidebar itself.
15. Click on "MORE" below the game title in the main window [you can also right-click on "Deus Ex" in the sidebar] and in the dropdown select "Install Mod/Patch".
16. Follow the instructions to navigate to where the patch files are located and select the .exe.
17. Allow the installer to run completely, again ignore any error pop ups.
18. Select "Exit" after the installer finishes.

-- Update Wineskin to Launch Revision --
19. In PortingKit, again click on "MORE" [or right-click] and select "Show in Finder".
20. In the Finder window that opens, right-click the Deus Ex file, and select "Show Package Contents".
21. A new window should appear, that contains several items/folders including a "Wineskin" app. Double-click on "Wineskin" to launch it.
22. In the Wineskin app, click the "Advanced" button.
23. Near the top of the Wineskin Advanced window should be a "Windows EXE:" navigation box. By default this points to the base game launcher "Deus Ex.exe"; we want it to route to the Revision launcher; copy and paste the following text into the navigation box including the quotation marks:
"C:\GOG Games\Deus Ex GOTY\Revision\System\Revision.exe"
24. Close the Wineskin Advanced window (it will save the change automatically and quit the Wineskin app).

25. Optional: I recommend renaming the modified game file to "Deus Ex Revision". (Note: you don't need PortingKit to run the actual game, it will run as a standalone app.)

That should do the trick! Now when you double-click on "Deus Ex Revision" it should launch the helper app that lets you pre-set some game options and launch into Deus Ex: Revision.

Have Fun!

This is the only guide to installing Deus Ex Revision on MacOS/OSX, and it still works! (2019 Intel MacBook Pro running Ventura 13.6.1)

Thank you!
