I've never been able to run Deus Ex successfully without turning off all sound in safe mode, I just get a crash to desktop followed by a critical error message that reads

General protection fault!
History: glxDetectOutput <- UGalaxyAudioSubsystem::Init <- UEngine::InitAudio <- UGameEngine::Init <- XGameEngineExt::Init <- DDeusExGameEngine::Init <- InitEngine

I really want to play this game (have done since forever) preferably with sound :) please help me, I realise this is probably a problem that only affects me but anyone who can help me play this game will earn muchos respect for whatever thats worth

Nevermind, I was a bit quick to ask without doing any research. I looked on the Eidos forums and found this http://forums.eidosgames.com/showthread.php?t=70796 and it works perfectly now :) :) :) I just did this from the forum post (this is copy pasted from the link)

What I did was go into Deus Ex\System and mess with the DeusEx.ini file.
Specifically, under [Galaxy.GalaxyAudioSubsystem], I changed "UseDirectSound" to "False", and changed "Use3dHardware" to "True"

Awesome, now to get lost in a grand conspiracy or two or three etc :D

ten years later ...

i follow what you did, and even tried the suggestion to increase the latency
but it didn't work for me
i'm using a nvivia 750ti, on amd 5 2600 cpu
also, the link you provided is broken

did gog resolve this issue ? i can get it to work by going using "safe mode for troubleshooting" and selecting not to start 3dsound hardware

but there should be a fix for this to make it work like it should. someone else suggested turning on vsync
i'm not sure where the nvidia setting is to turn on vsync for this game, and then, that's not guaranteed to work

did gog fix this ?

Yes, I had the same problem. Could not launch the game as it would crash immediately. I could run the game in safe mode, although it would crash shortly after.

Installed the "Revision" DLC and it told me, that data execution prevention had to be disabled. I game stream from an "old" laptop that perfectly runs a lot of other GOG games with windows 10 home. The option to disable data execution prevention is greyed out, but this worked for me:

Open a cmd with administrator rights

To disable:
bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff
Restart the PC afterwards

To enable:
bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOn
Restart the PC afterwards

It works for me now in vanilla without any mods.
