After hours of frustration, I'd like to share how I resolved this issue.
Problem:
Dethkarz crashes during a race with no apparent cause. In my experience, the crash would occur well into the race (3 or 4 laps) and occurred most frequently on Red Planet and Grand Keys. I couldn't identify any particular pattern that triggered it, e.g. use of a power-up, # of cars on screen, region of track.
Solution:
In my case, crashes stopped when I set CAR LOD to LOW.
While troubleshooting, I also found that allowing slowdown reduced crash frequency.
