My experiences so far after completing just the tutorial level are mixed. It couldn't be any easier to setup (just copy the game.exe into your Desperados\Game folder and start it), it looks way nicer this way and plays great as ever. The objects are not too small and the bigger map vision is always helpful. The cinematics are properly alligned to the middle of the screen and the user interface is matched with the aspect ratio.
However the camera in some cutscenes at least seems to be bugged: on the second level it didn't follow Clayton, in fact it stayed focused on the house the entire time and couldn't be moved until the cutscene was over (or skipped). Does anybody else also have this? (I'm using the 1600x900 resolution if that matters.) Another -- albeit minor -- issue is that the main menu isn't alligned to the middle and the loading screen is blank. That's all. :)
(Anyway, either of them isn't really a deal-breaker for me as I've finished this game upwards of 10 times already and can do without the introductions to the levels if I must.)
A good advice: after replacing the game.exe (take a backup beforehand, just in case), don't go into the graphics settings as it can mess up the resolution.
A great find after all, thank you very much, OP! :)
Update: currently I'm at level 6 and haven't encountered any problem with the cutscenes since last time. Moresoever I tried to lower the resolution to avoid the black borders on the smaller levels (1280x720 works like a charm, Doc McCoy's Cabin, which is the smallest level, fills the whole width and a little more than the full height) and that fixed multiple things: now I have loading screens like normally, the HUD looks even better (no duplicate Desperados text on the bottom bar) and out of sheer curiosity I loaded level 2 again and the cutscene now played without a hitch! (Previously it got stuck 2 out of 2 times.) It all came with the cost of seeing a little less (but still more than in the usual 4:3 ratio) and not using my laptop's native resolution, but heck, I can live with that. :)
If only there was such an easy fix for the occasional freezing / looping sound issue...
