Nah, I would like to keep my Desperados original, but I expected from GOG to be more efficient, but not this kind of efficiency. If they do not fix the problem in next two years, then I would be much worried because, that's the time I will play again this game.

Still sux tho (for no solution on constant crashes) :(

anoffday: Now I'm having another problem. Whenever I try to move when an enemies view is scanning around, it lags.

bighhead: I was just about to ask the same question. I have the same issue with demo version and was curious if GoG fixed it in its release. I did a quick google research and it seems to be related to nvidia cards.

Hazexel: Did you try to change settings for sound? From high to low? I remember that I had that problem too 4-5 years ago, but can't remember how I fixed that.

bighhead: Changing graphic and sound settings has no effect on the issue on my computer.

Anyways it's not related to crashing issue so I guess it should get its own topic....
I had this "view cone" lag with the original boxed game. Here's a thread of mine from ages ago.

I bought it from GOG anyway and do not get the lag anymore.

I have an HD4850, Q6600.
Hello, am new to this site, just wanted to say I cant even get my game to start, let alone having it crash. All I get is "Please install a newer version of Direct X". This is the second game I've downloaded from this site in 3 days, the other being Empire Earth, and havent been able to play either. I got a bit excited when I found this site, and found the games were Vista compatible, in my naivety I thought that meant they had been reprogrammed to work on Vista, but no. Good luck to you all I hope you solve your crashing problems, Martin

Hmm, have you actually got a full DirectX9 installed on your machine? Vista comes with DX10 and DX9L (which is only part of DX9, not all of it). As such, if you want older games to run you need to get a full install of DX9. You can do this either by downloading the DirectX9 redistributable from the Microsoft Download site or by using the web installer to search for and install only the missing components. Links below:

The full redistributable (June 2010)
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8109

The Web Installer

Hope this helps getting your games to run.
Hello korell, thankyou for trying to help. I should have said in my earlier post that I have the updated DirectX on my pc. Thankyou anyway.

lesslucid: This is a workaround rather than a real solution, but: if you play with all of the sound options on the lowest notch (ie, with no sound) it doesn't seem to ever crash.
I am think that the crash is caused by the music. I disabled music and FX and only let the sounds of chars on, so i can hear when someone notices me and all the dialog. The game seems to run without crashes so far. I can do well without music and shot sounds.

I think everything can stay on except for music.
I'm interested in buying this game, but all these reports of it crashing/freezing surely discourage me from shelling out my money...

Has anyone tried running Desperados through programs like DDhack or D3DWindower? Maybe these will help.

Sound being the problem sounds reasonable, since when Desperados froze for me, I also got that looping sound loop effect. Perhaps this is one direction to try to find the problem and the solution?

In other note, has anyone contacted GOG again and got any replies? I'll probably contact them in the near future, seeing I didn't get any reply to my freeze report from a month ago.
Hi, I have the same constant crashing issues with this game, just contacted the GOG team and waiting for their response.

I've played Desperados at least twice on my old computer. This is an excellent game so it really deserves to be fixed..
Same problem as most here. I've run it on two separate computers and have been experiencing the same problem. Going to try in on my work system now with the music disabled to see if that helps me at least get through the tutorial.
Same problem here. I can't have fun while knowing the game may hang any second. Seems like this purchase was a waste (but I'm still hoping for a solution).
Seriously GOG? No solution yet? I am dissapoint. Still great game tho
any sign of a fix in the future??
I've straight up emailed gog about the issue asking for a refund. This was a couple months ago and I never even got a reply back. It appears they're just ignoring the issue, which is a shame. Up until this point I've had no problems with gog and have loved the service.
Same here, but I just don't understand why are they ignoring this (in my opinion) minor problem
