In Descent 1 and 2, what are flares for? They don't seem to do any damage to enemies, they don't seem to help guide missiles, and they don't light up the environment. So... what is point?

EDIT: Wait, never mind... it seems they DO light up the environment, a little. Although I have yet to run into an area where this seems necessary. Then again, I'm only on level 2...

Oh, give it time my young jedi. lol
Other than lighting up the environment, they can be used to used to open doors without wasting ammo.

Like with real combat planes, flares are for misleading homing missiles that are usually guided by IR (infrared) because they are little hotspots (that of course release some light).

Ooooh, ok. That makes sense.

They do actually use ammo, but it's a smaller amount than any of your primary weapons.

Wait what?? I'm 99% sure that flares don't redirect homing missiles...

Have you ever fired a flare on a wall near your position (not too close of course)? This worked in most cases. Homings were guided to the flare instead.
It is of course a bit tricky when you are relatively new to it, but with some experience it's a good counter against incoming(!) homing missiles.

I tried it and it didn't work. Are you sure you're not thinking about D3?

I know they're attracted to prox bombs, but not flares.

Actually, lasers use less energy than flares
