I was shocked to see a 'VR device' and 'VR head-tracking' option in the dos setup file for the first Descent. Does anyone have any background on what that would have been in 1994?

In the 90s there were VR headsets like there are today. They were just lower resolution and not as sleak. Back in 1993 I even had the chance to play Rise of the Triad with one.

It's highly unlikely that current day VR headsets would work with descent though.

Well yes I realize there must have been some kind of VR device in 1994 hence the option in the setup.exe, but I'm wondering if anyone had any specific examples/experience with one, what that would have looked like with this game in particular.

The most famous one was the VFX-1 : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VFX1_Headgear
