Much more frantic and intense than the first two games because the AI is better. The graphics are also a work of art. They epitomize the phrase 'eye candy'. I bought this game when it came out but gave it away after I finished it. I'm glad for GOG, you guys gave me the chance to get this nerve wracking Sci-Fi 3D experience onto the hard drive of my latest machine.
I cherished Descent II enough to keep the CD, the soundtrack to that game is awe inspiring. I just wish the soundtrack to Descent 3 was nearly as good. I shut the music off for this game... The big thrill of Descent I and II that Descent 3 lacks is destroying the reactor and finding your way out of the maze before the whole thing explodes. That's an excellent plot device and should have been included in Descent 3.
The stroke of genius that Descent II introduced was the GuideBot. This little guy humanized Descent II to an amazing extent. He really made me to feel that I was not alone in those mines. In Descent 3 the GuideBot is incredibly endearing and lovable. He's the best part of the game. The fact that he was given a personality in this game and that he takes damage and can die very easily enhances his importance for me and makes Descent 3 much more emotionally involving. A great game and worth every penny.
