Descent is a fully 3D first person shooter released in 1995. To give you an idea what this game is like, consider it came out about 6 months before Windows 95 was released and about a year after Doom.
It let you explore 360 degrees around your ship in a first person envrionment, something you couldn't even do in Quake, which came out a year later. So, Descent was pretty advanced for it's time.
The story is that some kind of alien virus has infected the mines on various planets throughout the solar system. You've been hired to go in and destroy the mines to keep the infection from spreading. It's similar to Doom in that you go in, search for keys, open doors, but different in that you need to need to escape each mine after destroying it's reactor core.
Occasionally you need to fight bosses too. After you work your way through all the planets you're treated to a nice cutscene at the end and a cliffhanger for Descent II.
Bottom Line: The game is still fun to play. I highly suggest you pick it up.
Descent II is more of the same. Slight upgrades in graphics resolutions and a new guide bot make things a bit easier. Also worth playing.
