Okay, how do I make a shortcut that I can use in my limited account to play the DXX rebirth version? Every time I try to transfer the shortcut from my admin account to my limited account it says the shortcut is broken. How do I make it work?

And I'm on 7 64.

Are people really using 8? I thought it was the new vista.

I'm no PC boffin so I honestly am not too sure. If I was in your position, I'd have just downloaded it on a limited account. Which operating system system are you using? If it's windows, I may be able to figure it out. I'm not a genius, but I'm *usually - edit* a good figureoutererer :)

I'm on 8 64. Nah it's pretty good once you get the hang of everything being in stupid places you'd never think to look.
I'm going to have a rake around my PC to see if I can recreate your problem and try to fix it. I'll be back in a couple of minutes. Don't get your hopes up though...

*edit* *I'm back*.

Stupid Windows 8. If this was XP It would have been easier.

I'm supposing Win 7 has something called File Explorer, or something similar. In other words, a program that lets you see 'documents and settings', 'my music', 'pictures' and all the rest?

Okay it's up to you so please don't blame me if you make planes fall out of the sky or something. Again, I'm no expert and still don't fully know my way around Win 8 after being used to XP. I would advise asking someone more techie than me or contacting GOG support. They are very helpful and quite quick to respond.

Anyway, I don't know what actions exactly you've took so far, so this is tricky.

This is what I found: First thing to do would be to (as the admin account) click on File Explorer, and in the search bar at the top, type: c:\users\(insert name of user here). Then, if it's anything like Win 8, it might say you don't have permission, "do you want to permanently allow access. Click "yes". You should see the desktop, docs and settings etc. for that user on the left of the screen. Perhaps you can then just drag and drop a copy of the admin's desktop shortcut of Descent into the other users desktop from here?

But I must stress, this is all supposition. I'm not massively familiar with Win 8, let alone Win 7, so if I were you, I'd wait for someone else to confirm what I've said or correct me and give you better advise.
But one thing I will say and I stand by is: You may as well just delete the files, then go online using a limited account and re-download it with that account. You should always only go online using a limited account because it is safer.

It all sounds like it could possibly be to do with permissions on your computer or something. I'm not sitting at your PC so it's difficult to be helpful really. You haven't been too specific, so again, difficult.

*edit* Yeah thinking about it, I'd ask GOG support if you absolutely must get to the bottom of how to create that shortcut. It's up to you, but I couldn't be faffed to fanny about trying to learn some elaborate file-juggling ninja method. If it was me, I'd just scrub it and start again. I mean is it really worth the bother? does the file on the admin account have sentimental value or something? :P

I'd choose the path of least resistance myself :)

If you do figure the long way out, please be sure to post the solution here in case anyone else is in the same boat. Plus I'm now emotionally invested in the mysterious case of the Descent file that doesn't want to leave home, so I'd like to know :D

RetroCodger426: On a side note: I prefer the MIDI music of DOSBox-Descent to that of the installed default renditions in Rebirth. Problem is, I can't for love nor money get the game to play any music files other than default. I've tried to make it play the Descent CD MP3s that came with the GOG purchase. Nothing happens. It doesn't help that when I type the path for the sound files, the game doesn't recognise the backslash (\) key.
From what I've read, MP3 support is flaky at present and it is recommended to use OGG files instead.

ThugsRook has addon files for all the different types of music, so you could try downloading the one you want and putting it in the same folder as the D1X-Rebirth executable. In the sound and music options make sure that the Built-In/Addon Music option is selected.

Here is his site: http://www.mediafire.com/folder/3pvad9n87rx45/DESCENT

In the addons folder there are a number of addon files (.DXA) for use with Rebirth. I believe the music ones are as follows:

D1X-D1HMP.DXA
Descent 1 MIDI via Descent Human Machine Interfaces MIDI Files.

D1X-D1MACCDA.DXA
The CD audio from the Macintosh version of Descent 1 (the only D1 that had CD audio, and I think this is the same soundtrack that GOG provide in their extras).

D1X-D1RSC.DXA
Descent 1 MIDI music recorded from a Roland SC-55 sound card.

D1X-D1SBL.DXA
Descent 1 MIDI music recorded from a SoundBlaster sound card.

D2X-D2CDA.DXA
Descent 2 CD audio.

D2X-D2HMP.DXA
Descent 2 MIDI via Descent Human Machine Interfaces MIDI Files.

D2X-D2IACDA.DXA
The CD audio from the Infinite Abyss version of Descent 2.

D2X-D2MACCDA.DXA
The CD audio from the Macintosh version of Descent 2.

D2X-D2MAXCDA.DXA
The CD audio from the PlayStation version of Descent 2 (Descent Maximum).

D2X-D2RSC.DXA
Descent 2 MIDI music recorded from a Roland SC-55 sound card.

D2X-D2SBL.DXA
Descent 2 MIDI music recorded from a SoundBlaster sound card.

D2X-D2VCDA.DXA
The CD audio from the Vertigo Series version of Descent 2.

Obviously, only use one music addon at a time (well, one for D1X-Rebirth, one for D2X-Rebirth, being as the two are different programs).
Crikey korell, you know your onions. Thanks again :)

8 is the new Vista IMO (although I'm a Linux fanboy at heart, so anything by Microsoft [or Apple] is awful ;)

As for making a shortcut...where are you transferring it from? Can't you just go to the Program Files folder and right-click and hit "make shortcut"?

Also, I really suggest installing to C:\Games or some-such...outside of Program Files, cause in 7 Program Files is a protected OS folder.

Program Files is a protected OS folder in Vista, too. It got introduced in Vista and retained through 7 and 8. Definitely don't install games there (at least not old games anyway). All mine go to C:\Games\...

I don't understand the problem Generalelectric has with the shortcut creation though, but I use the default user account which has admin privileges (but not the full true administrator account which is hidden by the OS in Vista and 7 - don't know if 8 does the same but it quite possibly does).

A redownload D1X-Rebirth with the normal user account being used and the shortcut issue should disappear, or so I'd expect, anyway. Definitely sounds like some kind of permissions problem.
This shortcut problem is baffling. I can't think of any logical reason to store games in amongst program files. I always put the files in their default location: 'C:\Games\GOG\'. Ithought everyone did. Why put them anywhere else? Makes no sense.

Re: Win 8. Lol it's not bad at all once you get the hang of it's topsy-turvy 'logic', or lack of. It is a prime case of "if it ain't broke..." in that respect. However, some of the new additions I quite like, and it's fast and much more stable than my previous: XP. Microsoft's main problem was trying to be all things to all people. Don't know about Vista...
Sorry, off topic there :)

RetroCodger426: This shortcut problem is baffling.
The shortcut problem is a basic permissions issue. The problem is the OP is "transferring" the shortcut from the admin account and the limited account doesn't have the appropriate permissions to use it. It will work if he gives everyone full permissions to the shortcut itself.

I never install to the default location. It's usually in Progam Files. Then again I install games to a different disk entirely. Your path works quite well, no spaces or dots.
I tried checking off some box under properties that is supposed to allow me to run it as admin in my limited account, but it doesn't work.

How do I give it permission?

And it's on my desktop in a file in my admin account.

I don't understand why this: (right-click on shortcut/run as administrator) won't work.

As for the permissions, if it's anything like Windows 8, it's just a matter of right-clicking the desktop shortcut, choosing 'properties', then next, choosing 'security' - from there you can choose a user and edit their permissions. From what you've said, it sounds like you may have already tried this with no success, though...

Failing all that, you could try doing the whole process in reverse: First, delete Rebirth, then, sign in as your standard limited account. Using this account, re-download Rebirth to this same limited account's desktop or 'My Documents'. Lastly, send a shortcut to your admin account. I know this still doesn't shed any light as to why you can't do it your way...sorry.

Honestly, that's all I can say. I can only speak from my own experience. I suggest that if you have no joy here, contact GOG support. Good luck, and I hope you get it sorted.

Oops! When I said I install to "C:\Games\GOG" in an earlier post, that was a mistake. I meant to say: *C:\GOG Games* - referring to DOSBox Descent. I know, nothing to do with Rebirth. I Think I'm confusing myself now :)

*edit* Question: Long shot, but is it possible that the issue could be to do with a conflict of permissions between DOSBox-Descent and Rebirth. You know? - How Rebirth needs files from the DOSBOX ver. I was thinking, maybe the files from DOSBox-Descent don't have the necessary permissions? Maybe someone who knows more than me about PCs could confirm if this is possible?

Without full details (and screenshots of shortcut properties would be useful too) we won't be able to help Generalelectric with their shortcut problem. We need to know what options are being used, what permissions set, which account is being used to edit the shortcut permissions and such. Clearly it is a permissions issue, and anyone who uses multiple user accounts with different permissions levels needs to learn how to manage permissions on their OS, or at least how to open up permissions from within the admin account so that it works in the limited accounts.

My advice is that if Generalelectric can use their admin account then do so. If Win8 is anything like Vista and 7, the default user account has admin permissions, but is not the true administrator account which is hidden. The default user account is protected with UAC (which can be turned off) so any admin permission requirement triggers a prompt for confirmation. It should get the game working with the least effort this way.

From the admin account, you can open up permissions to all users. But as RetroCodger426 said, downloading DXX-Rebirth within the limited user account should work too, as you then use the permissions of the limited account and the shortcut you create is created using those same permissions.

As the shortcut in question is for DXX-Rebirth, GOG support likely will not help as it isn't a product they provide.
I did try extending the permission using the admin account. I don't know how else you'd do it.

In the end I just copied the files to my limited account.

It works that way but was slow to start up the first time for some reason.

And why is it that most games have to be installed in the admin account?

Generalelectric: And why is it that most games have to be installed in the admin account?
If you install into Program Files (which is a protected OS folder since Vista) then you need admin privileges. I don't use Program Files for my games and I recommend others to install outside that folder, too, such as C:\Games\...
And in all seriousness...all of this can be remedied by just disabling User Account Control :)
