I just bought the mac version of Descent 1 and 2. The old controls for save game were alt f2 but all the alt commands on the gog version are different now and I can't find how to save the game! Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Under normal circumstances I would suggest using a source port (D2X-XL or Rebirth) instead of playing the original. They offer a variety of improvements, are designed to run well on modern systems, but they can still give an experience essentially identical to the original if you desire.

I have no idea if the source ports support Mac, though.

thank you both. I downloaded the rebirth versions but they won't open. It says there is an error because it cannot find the descent.hog file. I cannot find that file anywhere. Any ideas?

For D1 you have to copy descent.pig and descent.hog from the original game directory into the Data folder (which you may have to create) in Rebirth (You have to do the same for d2, but there are additional files). I believe to get to the files on the mac version you'll have to right click (control-click) on the GOG app. Then click on "Show Package Contents". That will open a folder and somewhere in there you should find the original data files. :)

Thank you for the tip. I did what you said but I could not find any hog files anywhere so I just copied the whole thing into a folder where I have rebirth sitting. It still does not work. Do I have to add it to the application somehow? I am not the most computer savvy guy. Thanks again for help

So I have the descent.hog.diff and descent.pig.diff files from the patches on the rebirth website. I also have all the contents from the gog game in the same folder as the rebirth. Do I need to change the descent.hog.diff to just descent.hog and is it as simple as just renaming it?

I tried saving by holding down fn,f and pressing f2 but it did not work. Any other ideas?

OK, here's where they are:

Descent.app/Contents/Resources/Descent.boxer/C Descent.harddisk

Copy descent.hog and descent.pig from that directory to your Rebirth directory and it should work fine :)

I tried FN and F2 and all it does is bring up options. It does not let me save. I also cannot get the Rebirth program to work. Thanks for looking into the Mac issue. Let me know if you figure it out.

To save you'll need to use alt+fn+f2...just for any of the f-keys to work, you'll need to hold down Fn as well. (You can change this setting in system preferences -> keyboard, where it says "Use all f1, f2, etc. keys as standard function keys".

With that checked, you'll have to hold down the Fn key when you hit the f-keys that raise and lower the volume, etc. while on the desktop.

Thank you Thank you!!! I finally got it to work. I had to change the DESCENT.HOG to lower case letters and it finally worked! Is there a way to change the resolution?
