Hullo,
I didn't struggle much with the question of which order to buy and play Fallout in - the story seemed compelling enough to play them in order (and indeed it is).
But I wonder about Descent. My curiosity is tickled, I wonder what the experience is like and for that, I wonder which version to buy and play.
Are the changes between the first two Descents and the third remarkable enough to warrant the purchase of both? Or will I be able to get along with just one - which one?
Descent III seems a logical choice because of the (slightly) more updated graphics, but perhaps I'm missing out on a better Descent earlier in the series. What do you guys think?

lol. A difficult question and really a matter of personal preference. For me, I prefer going through any game series chronologically. In a lot of cases, it's fairly difficult to try to go back to something older in a series and you're possibly working with dumbed-down graphics, sound, control, etc., than the newer game you just played. I know I had that trouble when I played Oblivion first before Morrowind. While I now think that Morrowind is a better game, RPG-wise, story-wise, and exploration-wise, it was hard to get into because the graphics, especially the characters, were nowhere near as good.
It really depends what you're going for. Admittedly, the Descent series is not much more than action games with little backstory. The gameplay feels different between Descent 1/2 and Descent 3, but it's similar enough that you probably won't be missing much. Descent 3's environment is definitely more varied than the previous ones. But you're talking to someone who went ahead and played Doom 1 after playing Doom 2, even though they're essentially the same.
Since there isn't much variation in the gameplay in the series, my advice is to put it down to how much you like it. If you can't get enough of Descent's gameplay style, get the whole series and start with Descent 1. You'll have lots of different missions to satisfy you. But if it looks like you may tire of it after a while, just get Descent 3 then.

If you don't want to buy them all (why would you not want to do that, actually? ;-) and looking for the maximum package, I'd suggest D3. It'S the largest game and will keep you busy for the longest time, I think.
D2 is really great, though, and I strongly suggest getting it. You can have the engine and graphics updated by various free projects (I mentioned them somewhere on these forums) like D2xl etc.
D1, on the other hand, is mostly for fans of the series (as of today) IMHO. It's quite small in design compared to the others. Let's say you don't get much you would not get with D2 and some downloadable levels. Still, it's a must-have once you're hooked onto the series. Like for D2 there are lots of free enhancements etc. to make you Descent experience a little more up-to-date.
Story-wise I wouldn't mind. The story is not really the strongest part of the Descent series.
