Lots and lots of motion sickness issues are caused by FOV (field of view) issues. If a game has too wide or too narrow a view, and you're sitting too close or too far away, you can get motion sickness even if you aren't susceptible to it from other sources. For instance, Psychonauts makes me sick over long periods of play, but not most other games, or car rides. I don't even get seasick.
For a lot of games, you can't adjust the FOV, but you CAN sit further away, which almost always helps, even if it doesn't get rid of the problem completely. It's become more of an issue in recent years for PC players of console-based games, because console games are designed to be played on a TV that's usually halfway across the room. When you sit 18" away from a huge computer monitor, you can get motion sickness or headaches, for the same reason you feel weird when you wear wall-eye glasses.
