Setting up YANG:
Settings->Source Ports
-DOSBox tab-
Check "I have DOSBox"
Find DOSBox (Should be in the "Descent & Descent 2" directory when you installed the game. You're looking for "dosbox.exe")
-Descent tab-
Check DOS Descent and locate it (you're looking for DESCENT.BAT).
Check D1X-Rebirth if you have the port and locate it (you're looking for d1x-rebirth-gl.exe).
For the "User Maps Directory," choose the "missions" directory in the Descent 1 folder.
You can setup Descent 2 the same way.
Let me know if you're still having issues. Make sure to check "Look for rooms on startup" in the main window, so you don't have to click "Get list of rooms" every time.

awesome, thank you for the answer. i havent tried it yet, but i will in the coming days. i'll update on whether or not i got it to work. thanks for taking the time to type this up!
alright everything seems to work in so far as you described. setup using yang did work, my friend can join my yang lobby and when i do "launch" the game launches for both of us.
the problem then is, what do we do? we end up at the main menu of the game. "new game" doesnt work. and in multiplayer when i do "start network game" and he does "join network game" the game crashes for him. do we have to play around with dial modem or something?
thanks for any infos you may be able to give
Ah, I apologize for not providing the rest of the info.
First, get Rebirth. Go here: http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/
Download the correct package (D1 or D2 for your OS) and extract it directly to your D1/D2 directory. Then set up YANG to point to rebirth in the Settings->Source Ports menu.
When you install rebirth, make a new pilot file to avoid compatibility errors.
Once in the lobby (and you both have the maps, sometimes YANG goes wonky with maps so I suggest backing up all missions beforehand and having the missions folder up in the background so you can replace any maps that get "misplaced"), and both players "ready up," the host clicks "Launch game."
Descent should open for both players. In rebirth:
-Multiplayer tab
-Host -> Start UDP/IP network game
-Set up the game and hit "enter" when the name of the game is highlighted to host.
-Hit enter to start the game.
-Everyone else -> Join UPD/IP network game
-The correct IP address should be pre-entered. Hit enter.
-Wait for the game to appear. Hit enter when it is highlighted and wait for the host.
And that should be it. Have fun, and hopefully I'll see you in the mines (Kali is the best place to find people to play with as of now, but I'll try and set up some YANG matches every once in a while... maybe I should make a thread on the forums here)!

again thanks music fan for typing this up for nubs like me. posts like this make forums worthwhile. ill try it out with my buddy in the coming days again. he works a lot so i always have to wait a bit! :D
Yeah man, no problem. Maybe you'll see me in the mines sometime... I play as "Swann." If you need a quick game, there are always a bunch of people on Kali you can usually get a game with, myself included.
Happy Descenting!

YANG 0.83 was released today,
We have now fixed that problem with the maps and some other stuff.
And now Descent players don't have to worry anymore about their maps getting deleted ;-).
Apologies if this caused any problems but thankfully to Turrican this is resolved.
There is also better detection of the in game status Yes/No when viewing the server lists.
For the news today at April 9th 2010 is posted on the main YANG site at http://www.multi-players-zone.com/yang/
