I notice that the MIDI music in DXX Rebirth uses a different set of voices than the MIDI in the GOG version. I prefer the original, bleep-bloopier type. Anybody know if there's a way to switch it (for D1 or 2)?

Maybe. DOSBOX has several different synthesizers.

Are you talking about OPL synthesizer? If you are, I would recommend that you use the OPL3 soundtrack pack that is available on the DXX-Rebirth addon page:

The addons are dxa files, how do you use those on a Windows machine?

dxa files are DXX-Rebirth archives. Just throw the ones that you want to use in the data folder.
