About two weeks ago I purchased Descent 3 and have been having a major issue getting it to run. I've since then submitted three tech support tickets, each of which promised that I'd hear back from them "shortly" but I have yet to receive even an automated e-mail. Is this normal or do they possibly have some kind of spam filter that might be accidentally blocking my email ticket? I have tried searching everywhere for the solution to my Descent 3 problem, but I still can't get it to run and having some sort of acknowledgment from the GOG team and any help at all would be most appreciated. I've also posted my problem on this forum but I am assuming no one knows how to help me out since no one has posted any possible solutions. While I'm here I'll include my issue/question:
Right after launching the game it plays the Dolby splash intro, but immediately after it the game crashes and an error message shows up (see attached image). I've tried running the game in numerous compatibility modes and patching it to 1.4, but to no avail. I have no idea what could be causing this crash (I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, so that could possibly be an issue?) I get the same results when I try to run it on my laptop, which also has Windows 7 64-bit.

GOG don't actually offically support Windows7 yet, though I would of still thought they would of at least told you that if they didn't want to devote time to helping you with your problem. They claim to be working on Win7 compatibility for all games and will annouce that in the future, when is anyones guess. Can you send them another support ticket with a different email address and provider then what you have tryed already?
As for your problem I'm not sure what it is, could you post your system specs as that may help in working it out?

For one, it's already patched to 1.4, I'd do a clean install there. You can run the unofficial 1.5 patch which is on the net, but I don't think that will make a huge difference here.
I run it in Win7 fine (though I need to use admin permissions for some reason), though I have the 32-bit version, I suspect the 64-bit one is what's giving you the problem.
Can you try something kinda odd as a test? - open a big program or two and leave them running while you launch D3. I can't remember what game I tried that worked better that way... I think it was some kind of overflow when reporting available memory. It will likely not work, but it can't hurt eh?
Thanks for the quick replies guys. I will try submitting another ticket from a different email address and see if they respond. As for my system specs:

I just tried running D3 while other games were open in the background and that didn't work, I will try a clean reinstall and see if that does anything.
You might want to use Tomas' D3 installer.

Sweet machine! One more generic hint - try setting the D3 executable (main.exe) affinity to a single CPU. I think you launch the game and then assign it from within task manager.
Since you have Windows 7 Ultimate, you also have Windows XP Mode.
It actually emulates the 32-bit OS, so it should be able to run D3. The question is whether the performance will be acceptable.
I clicked that link to find the Tomas installer you told me to try but can't find it? I tried the search function "typed in "Tomas"" and nothing came up.
And also, how do I "set the D3 executable (main.exe) affinity to a single CPU."?

V1nc3Vega: And also, how do I "set the D3 executable (main.exe) affinity to a single CPU."?

Run the game, then switch away from it (sometimes hitting the Windows key helps, or Alt-Tab...) Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager. Look for main.exe and right-click on it. Click on "Set Affinity..." and check only one CPU in the list.

I just tried this and it didn't change anything unfortunately, but thanks for the suggestion.

This seems like my last option but I still can't find it on that link? It's probably right there and I'm blind.
Sorry, I meant Thomas... but the whole website is his so searching for Thomas probably won't be too useful.
But look for Descent 3 in the contents section... c'mon, it's not that hard to find!
hmmm... or is it? I guess not everyone would think to follow a link named 'Descent 3' when looking for something called a Descent 3 installer... ;)

The error message states access violation and mentions ntdl.dll
As quoted :
Ntdll.dll file is a native API of the operating systems of Windows and contains the core functions of the NT. In your version of the operating system, is located in ntdll.dll C: WindowsSystem32, C: WinntSystem32, or C: i386 folder. Â causing ntdll error? Ntdll errors are caused by a number of editions for registration as a device driver written or badly outdated
I dont see anybody mentioning Drivers - can I ask what version of the graphics drivers you are using
Can I also ask if you try in windowed or full screen
Can I also ask if you have disabled sound and tried again.
All those are things you may not want to try but many issues are around outdated drivers or even sound drivers.
Being as this game is quite an old game it could be a simple sound compatibility issue
Give it a go anyway

Also forgot to mention - although switching to 1 core can assist - not necceserily will core 0 be the 1 you want to us - try each core in turn - its doubtful this will fix as you mention you tried on a laptop but did not say if the laptop is quad core

So with Descent 3, I was able to get it running on a Windows 7 x64 box without any problem. It is running in Admin mode at the time so that might be one of the necessary requirements.
I'm surprised that there are many issues between Vista and 7 since they are basically the same thing at the core.

I've had zero problems with Win 7 (apart from Evil Genius opening movie not playing). I think it's just the nature of x64.
