I was experiencing some slight graphical errors with Direct3D on (there were lines in the text that bugged me) so I tried switching to OpenGL. However, when I return to the title screen in OpenGL all I get is a black screen and I cannot see the cursor or the menu items. I can hear the music and sound effects but I can't see anything unless I alt-tab out and back in. Is there some way to solve this?

Are you using the 1.4 patch? What video card do you have? Have you tried updating it's drivers? Turn on or off VSynch in D3 graphics options and in Windows.
I use an nVidia GT220 video card. The game is already on 1.4, not sure what you mean by the patch unless you mean the 1.5 patch. I'll try VSync and see what happens.

EDIT: Turning off VSync doesn't work. I'll try updating the drivers and see. If I have to stick with the Direct3D options then I'm fine with the little graphical glitches, but it is mildly annoying.

EDIT: Still nothing. I updated to patch 1.5 and it didn't change anything at all either. I'm not sure what is causing this, but I bet it's the fact that my video card is one of the worst nVidia cards :(

You should stick with OpenGL as that is what Nvidia is made for. Maybe play around with your windows settings or you could post on www.descentbb.net for more help.

I play D3 on a P4, 3ghx, with Nvidia 7600GT and it works fine.
I'm sticking with OpenGL but not being able to see the title screen is a bit annoying, plus when I quit all my windows that are open get resized...

I'm not sure what OS your using but I am playing it on 7. I had a problem with black screen as well but not when it's been happening to you. For me it happened when I first loaded the game.

Anyway what I did was start the game through the Games folder by running as an admin. I've been using OpenGL with V-sync off and I haven't had the problem again. I haven't been able to fix the weird looking text though. I actually think that particular problem is more hardware as I have the same issue with Freespace. For the record I have an AMD 4850, I'm uncertain if that really matters.

Hope it helps
I'm also having video/graphic issues with Descent 3.... I've attached a couple photos to show what I'm talking about.

I am running on Windows XP Home edition. I have tried using Open GL (Intel 865G) for video & got a black screen doing so. When getting the black screen I don't hear anything either. I have to close it with ctrl-alt- delete. After that I am unable to open it again until I reset my computer. Also, I don't know how to turn on/off VSynch. I don't know where that can be found.
PLEASE HELP!! Thanks!! :-)

Right click your desktop, select PROPERTIES, click teh ADVNACED TAB. IN there depending on what videoc ard you have will be an option to turn off V-synch. Also, onboard vidoe isn't the best to play any game.
Thanks! Actually, what I ended up doing was switching out the video card from my wife's computer (a GeForce 7600 Gs) & out it into my computer. That fixed all the video "errors" It looks crystal clear now. :-)
IN case anyone is wondering about my wife's computer, the onboard video card is an Nvidia MX4 or something like that & she doesn't play much games unless it's Sudoku, solitaire or a console game. So, she's fine with it. :-P
