I take it there is no way to permanently disable the enemy spawners in Descent 1? I know they will temporarily shut off once you kill enough enemies, but they seem to restart once you return to the area.

If you can't disable them, it'd be the only major flaw in what is otherwise a great game. If that's the case, I don't suppose anyone knows of a mod that does the job (either with a hard limit or maybe placing a control switch somewhere in the level)?

It depends on the spawner, really. Generally, they'll spit out X number of enemies before deactivating, and will reactivate when you return to the area 3 times. After the third batch of dudes, most of them will give out permanently. However, there are some that will spit out as many as 5 or 6 batches, and a couple that I think may be truly infinite. (Several will also reactivate after you blow the reactor, even if they've run out of bots earlier.) Fortunately you can shoot the bots before they're fully formed, meaning you can often destroy them before they're fully formed (so they can't shoot you). If you manage to knock an enemy backwards into the spawner, they'll also take damage from the spawner itself as it tries to create a new bot on top of them. If they bother you that much, just try to avoid backtracking through those areas as much as possible.

I don't know of any mods that change their behavior, though.

And it looks like they return in Descent 2 as well.

Thanks for the reply. Honestly, that pretty much kills these games for me. They are so much fun aside from that single annoying aspect. To me it's just incredibly frustrating in a game that is already as difficult and disorienting as these are.

Trying to avoid backtracking through them also seems virtually impossible, because the in-game map isn't exactly user-friendly, plus the spawners aren't labeled anyway.

Hopefully the DX Rebirth mod will eventually include an option to place a hard limit on the number of enemies they churn out.
The spawners all run out after a certain number of waves they spit out (at least I've been able to turn them all off anyway, maybe I missed one) and the amount of waves they pump out is based on the difficulty level from my experience.

If you can find the exact spot that turns on the spawner, you can fly through it, kill the bots as they form, then just continue turning on the spawner until it stays off. It's a little time consuming, but you get a bunch of points towards an extra life and sometimes the bots will spit out shields or weaponry that you can collect.
