Hi. I dug my old IBM 486dx2/66 out of the closet and fired it up recently. I see GOG has a lot of the classics, and I'd like to play them on the actual machine from the era. I noticed when I go to download Descent, it wants me to download GOG Galaxy. For obvious reasons, that's not going to work on that box lol.

Anyone know if there is some way to get the original files for the games? Files I could use in MS-DOS?
You don't need Galaxy. GOG is kinda quiet about that they have standalone installers. Go to the game in your library and look for the "Download offline backup game installer".

I don't know if that installer will work on your old box either. If it does not then you could install Descent on a newer box then just copy the Descent data to your classic box. I think just copying the entire "Descent" folder as-is should work.

Good luck!

You can also use Descent rebirth if you want to play on newer systems with updated graphics. But you need to the original files
Thanks all. I ended up installing GOG Galaxy on my regular box then installing Descent. I then went to the install path, and noticed the file list is like:

Given there are a bunch of files with uppercase, 8 char or less filenames it's pretty obvious what to copy over, lol. I copied them to my 486 (got my 3Com 3c905C-TXM NIC in the mail and with Windows for Workgroups installed, was able to actually send them over the network, so no dicking with floppies yay lol) and it worked like a champ.

Thanks again!
