Even though I've read about some not-so-nice things about the game developers, specifically about Depth of Extinction, I was going to go ahead and get this game when the price came down.

Yesterday I saw that it had a 75% discount ($3.74) in the Weekly Sale and put it on my shopping cart to purchase today. I don't have a lot of money to work with being disabled but have the pocket change and took that to the bank so I could get it today. It was a good price, I was ready for it!

Today I went to make the purchase and was stopped short...

The discount was dropped to 45%! Well, I guess I won't be getting the game, and cheapskates the publisher is, I've removed it from my Wishlist, not to mention the shopping cart. I do like surprises, but not this kind.

Oh well. No games until next month. Thank you HOF Studios! You can keep the game.

I'm really sorry about that but it was a mistake made by GOG. the game was only supposed to be discounted to 45%. We'll be doing another deeper discount around Christmas but hadn't planned to go that low (75%) until next year at the earliest.

Thanks for letting me know what happened. I have thought that it's the publishers who determine what the sale pricing will be. Is this not true? I derived this because some games don't go on sale at all other than the time when a game has been introduced to the Platform., some of these as far back as June 2017.Does GOG control all of the pricing and sales on every game?

I have researched every game of interest (have purchased just over 1,000 games on here at the average price of just under $3.00 per game, DLC, Package. Any discount in my book less than 66% is too low and I rarely purchase below this. I am on the home stretch now with 344 final picks in my Wishlist. I have been through every game on here and the only ones that come up now as possible additions to my Wishlist are those that newly become available on GOG.

My favourite games are the 2D (and pseudo 3D) games from the 1980s through the mid 2000s. My most favourite genre are RPGs. That's the range for me.

I find games overall have become more and more "stupid" for my tastes over the last ten years. My game collection goes all the way back to the mainframes of the 1960s to date, with games from almost every computer system, console and GOG! This all started in 1972 when I beheld a video game for the first time ever - PONG, at first not quite knowing what I was looking at since I did not know what a computer game was. I thought it was a television and it amazed me that those playing it at the time were actually controlling stuff on the screen! For me, all I knew where the electromechanical arcade games this new thing was sitting amongst!

I have never lost my fascination for video games! I have more games now than I will ever play in the rest of my life! It's more fun for me to collect them and learn the history!

Dropping that one game (and recently others like the wargame, "Steel Division II" and the thing offered as separate bits and pieces that to me, is an alebourite way to price-gouge, putting all that out just since June!)

I do like the discounts and depend on them, NEVER paying full, or even half price for any game - except on very rare occasions.

Anyway, I guess I owe the HOF Studios an apology for lashing them instead of GOG!

Thanks.

It is the publisher that decides to have a sale but GOG does the data entry and that's where the mistake happened. I think they pressed 7 instead of 4 on a number pad (they are right next to each other there) and Depth of Extinction wound up with a 75% off instead of the 45% off I had requested. Because they are in Poland, it could not be corrected for almost 24 hours so a lot of people got the deal.

thanks for letting me know about your preferences. We will definitely have a sale in your price range at some point. I understand most people are buying on discount, and I myself do it with a lot of titles I buy unless I absolutely have to play one right now.

I'm also primarily into RPG's and feel similarly.

thanks for writing back and I hate that this situation got you frustrated with my studio and GOG. Mistakes happen and it's unfortunate. I hope you have a good weekend.

I appreciate your help on this and I totally understand. I will restore your game to my Wishlist and get it when it does go into my price range because, even though I have quite a few roguelikes, including the earliest DND, Beneath Apple Manor, Hack, NetHack, Ancient Domains of Mystery, Moria, Sword of Fargoal, Angband, and of course, the many Dungeons & Dragons Advanced Computer Product dungeon-crawlers, not to mention, the Gauntlet titles! Your game will be the most modern one in my collection so far. I don't mess with the modern ones unless they are exceptional. By the looks of it, I would have fun with it.

A game I would like to see come out would be a medieval turn-based RPG. This would be something like those you found in the 1980s and 1990s, such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, and such. For the modern times as it is now, my preference for a new game would be one with a well-developed storyline, a medieval fantasy setting with at least some D&D rules as they were though with the kind of graphics found today! Think something like this would sell?

There is an abundance of strategy turn-based games available. I would rather like to see a return of those older turn-based games. I always enjoyed the adventuring, mystique and exploration of those games. I have only fairly recently added the grid-based strategy turn-based games when I began collecting the Strategic Simulations games, including their many wargames!

It is so sad that the genre I have described has disappeared and once in a great while, they do pop up but are usually goofy or stupid-looking in its artwork or extremely dumbed-down. I like the more "serious," non-comical games like those mentioned. There also is a vast quantity of "neo-retro" games out there stressing pixel art. To me, this is too artificial and I reject most of these type of games. Once in a while a very well-done one comes up. The modern titles as such, that have been created on 1980s and 1990s game engines are an exception. I hate the ones made on game engines like Unreal! Though they are supposed to be "nostalgic" and are marketed as games with a retro feel, things like modern lighting, shading, and other game elements make them fakes to me.

Don't know if you can use anything in future games that I have described here but I thought I would put out my thoughts on it. As for me, I'm just learning game development.

have you played Pillars of Eternity yet? If you liked the Baldur's Gate games then it might be interesting to you.

It's really hard to know what will sell these days. I think you have to work on a game concept/genre that you really understand and feel you can execute well with a few new things that make it interesting, Even if you pull it off very well, there are certainly no guarantees. Good luck with learning!

I do own Pillars of Eternity and have attempted the first play but didn't get very far with it yet. This is one game one needs to be well-focused on. I suppose, once into it, I would get along within just fine. It looks awesome!

Yeah, game development isn't easy but surprisingly I got pretty far into it in my attempt at simulating the Atari Home Pong game - the stand-alone console from 1976. I was able to use shading to replicate a black background over the rainbow background to that (as I saw it) I am having issues with collisions and have not gotten that quite down yet regarding which part of the paddle sends the ball at a particular angle. I have done extensive observations of this game's behaviour and it seems to be not always consistent. Part of my problem is trying to use a "step" code for this to replicate it as close as possible. I've set the project down almost a year ago and when I'm ready, I will go back into it again.
