It would be great if the game could output in 1920x1200 resolution. Just a stretch, doesn't have to be native.
The highest resolution is 1920x1080 which is the wrong shape for a 16:10 monitor. I can go for a lower res 16:10 but it resizes my desktop resolution which is a pain if I alt+tab to look something up
Hmmm, that's weird. The legal resolutions *should be* grabbed straight from your video card using a small command-line utility that runs in the background. Does it detect other widescreen resolutions?

yes. Its offering me:
800x600
1024x768
1152x864
1280x720
1280x768
1280x800
1280x960
1280x1024
1360x768
1360x1024
1366x768
1400x1050
1440x900
1600x900
1600x1200
1680x1050
1920x1080

My native res is 1920x1200 so I use 1680x1050 to maintain the same aspect ratio but would prefer the correct native res.

Show all only adds 60Hz to each res, except 1280x720 which gets both 60Hz and 59Hz

After some investigation, my hands are basically tied by the utility I'm using, which for some reason just won't detect that res for you.

There is a workaround : select fullscreen, but make sure "change resolution" is unchecked, and make sure you are in the resolution that you want before starting the game. When change resolution is off, it just uses whatever resolution you have when the game first started.

Then, just scale the game up. This might come with a slight performance hit, but you can turn the particle count down to compensate for it if you notice lag.

Hopefully that should work, sorry I don't have a more direct solution.
That workaround does not work for me. It goes to 1920x1080 with black bars on the sides.
A "custom resolution" option where you manually type the desired resolution would probably work. I don't know how much work it would be to add such a thing though.

I guess I don't find options until I start the game? I can't seem to find a way to change the resolution in the main menu, and the default resolution is not even full screen.
@Taltamir:

I'm sorry if I misunderstood you. The game window itself is 800x600 and this is fixed, you can adjust your viewport and scaling options, but you'll never get anything other than 800x600 pixels of game visuals. This is a limitation of the way the game was originally designed and could be something we can fix in a future title, but not for this game, so you'll always have black bars when you use a non-4:3 ratio resolution.

@ShadowWulfe:

The video options are in the options menu under video. You can access this from the save slot screen. Options->Video, then check "fullscreen" and then "change resolution" and then pick the resolution you would like.

The game starts in windowed mode as a safety measure.

It doesn't read mine either. The highest it offers is 1680x1050 (my res is 1920x1080; not complaining; just thought you'd want to know since time has passed, and I'm running the latest patch). That said, I'm glad you at least have different resolutions in there, as the teeny windowed mode really threw me for a while. :)

Yeah, I think with the current build of the game, this is the best it can do.

That said, we're going to fix this issue for sure in Defender's Quest 2. Not only will the game be able to resize the game window and use high-res, HD-ready assets, but we should have a less janky resolution detection system, too.

When the new engine work is done, theoretically we could re-release Defender's Quest 1 with these features, but that's going to be a long ways off from now.

Thanks for looking at this,
Actually, I've discovered that if I ignore the display settings altogether, and just click Fullscreen and Scale (under Video), it fills the screen vertically, and my headaches have stopped. :) No slowdown noted, and it's *so* much easier to see.

I can not remember the last time I was this addicted to a game. Well done. I love the Bonus and Challenge levels (hint, hint for DQ2) and keep going back to try new strategies, long after I've beaten them. You guys seriously rock. and this is coming from someone who played his first PC game back in 1982 on a TRaSh-80!

Truly, an amazing game. I'll definitely be pre-ordering the sequel.
