shootinputin47: I have the same problem too. Ironically there is a prated version that works just fine windows 8.1 What a let down from GOG.

draco259: I'm assuming the pirated version is pre-patch. The disk based version also works before the game is updated. For some reason something in the patch breaks it on 8.1.
I don't know, but here is the link.

Really now, can we do this without posting links to The Pirate Bay? Thanks :)
I am not promoting pirating by any means (hence why I bought this game again from GOG :-P) but the pirated version would be the disk img, so pre patch. Based on the change log for the patch, which you can find in the README.txt in the Deadlock 2 folder, I don't understand why the patch would cause any problems though.

Does anyone know how to force games into windowed mode? I was hoping for a config file, but can't find one >_>

Ok. I just wanted to show him that there are version of deadlock 2 that work fine with windows 8.
@GOG
Any chance this is going to get updated to work with Windows 8?
Oh wait. I just figured out my mistake: I bought several games the other day and it was not this one that uses Dosbox. This one is some kind of windows. I'm at an impasse. Don't know what else to try.

Ditto. Deadlock II is one of my all time favorite games and I was so excited to see GOG get it! But I'm on WIndows 8 and it is unplayable.

I am a saaaad moooose.
I'd also enjoy a functional Windows 8/8.1 version of Deadlock 2 :)
You can add -w to the target in the shortcut to run in a "window". Target should look something like this- "C:\GOG Games\Deadlock II - Shrine Wars\DEADLOCK.EXE" -w

When I do this, the bug gets switched to the opposite, where the mouse leaves a trail. It's at least somewhat playable that way.

Thanks for the tip. When I try it, I lose the cursor completely. Also I get a strange little box image in the upper left corner and black everywhere else. I wish they followed the old standard where "-?" would give you a list of the parameters available. I'd like to see what else there was to try. I suppose I could go through the alphabet...
I tried all the lowercase letters and I only found one, besides -w that does anything.

-p causes my cursor to display the "working" animation for 20 seconds, then nothing happens at all. When I go to task manager I see that there's a deathlock.exe running and getting cpu, but I have no idea what it's doing (at this step I discovered that on Windows8, there's no longer an option to switch to an application selected in task manager - I'd have tried it, otherwise). Also <alt><tab> doesn't show a deathlock application to switch to.

Strange. Does anybody remember what -p does for other applications? It may be that it's setting some value of something as in -p100 but I'm setting the value to null by not including a number... nope: when I try -p100 it says it is an "unknown parameter".

I'm not going to try digits or uppercase letters, so I guess I'm done with this line of reasoning.

Any more ideas?
See if any of the Command Line switches I found out do anything to fix it.

This is an interesting problem. I was so excited I download the game without noticing it was not listed for Windows 8.
However, this problem was on my original copy i bought when the game first came out in 98. I know there was a work around. But I believe the problem with the disappearing screen with the pointer remaining is inherent in the original game. There must have been a patch because I was able to resolve the problem.
Anyone else remember this? I'd love to play this game again!
