Wanted to play the game but unfortunately only get a black screen after the opening cinematic. The game is "under" the black screen as I can click randomly on items but obviously it is not playable this way. Any suggestions on how to get this to work?

Executive summary: there's no solution. If you are willing to go back to the version that went on sale originally, and forgo the patch that fixed stuff and added content, then there is a way to regress to that version - and it works on 8. I haven't bothered to try it.
