I have a Logitech Rumblepad II Wireless Gamepad. With the default controls, the throttle is assigned to the Z-Axis, which on the rumblepad is the right analog stick. Releasing the stick always reverts the throttle to 50%, which is not very playable, especially with the weapons assigned to the face buttons.
After much trial and error and some research on the Darkstar One website, here's what I came up with:
- Go into options and choose the controls tab on the left
- Select the checkbox for Joystick Control at the top, if it's not already selected
- Below there you'll see the axis selections, one of which is labeled "throttle", with a red invert selector just to the right of it. Click the box that allows choosing a control. It should currently say Z-Axis in that box. You'll get a popup that says "Press the key you would like to use". Press the delete key on your keyboard. Instead of assigning it to the delete key, it will remove the selection completely, and put a "+/-" in the red box.
- Then scroll down to advanced controls, and assign a button to "accelerate" and one to "break" (sic). I used the bottom shoulder buttons. I would also recommend assigning buttons to "afterburner" and "reverse thrust". I chose D-pad up (hat up), and D-pad down (hat down).
That's it. You should now be able to play Darkstar One pretty well with the rumblepad.

I honestly don't use the throttle. I have it default to 100% and just use reverse thrust and afterburner to adjust my speed. Reverse is handy in a fight and will slow you down or reverse you when used properly, and works basically as a brake.

Great tip!
Does anyone know how to invert the basic controls - like turning? I'm using a Saitek 3200 gamepad, and for some reason the ship controls (turning left and right) are inverted by defeault. I've tried using the above mentioned method, but whenever I manage to active the red "invert key" square the mapping of the control stick is overwritten - and vice versa.

I have the same problem with another joystick. I couldn't find a way, I'm still searching over the net for this :|

sorry to bring up an old thread...

In order to "invert" or "non-invert" the axes all you have to do is click the "red box" once on the desired control.

You don't get any visual confirmation of this, but only a "noise" that confirms you clicked the mouse button.

I was confused too as I guess I was always clicking the box an even number of times trying to figure out why nothing was visually changing.... but if you click the box just once, then try the game again the controls should be inverted.

If it matters, I'm using a wired Xbox 360 controller for DSO... the one problem I'm having is that with rumble enabled it sometimes gets "stuck" with a rumble and vibrates for a long time.
thank you so much!
