id finished darkstar one before, and remember enjoying it... so much so that i was really wondering why i had never replayed it. when i saw it on GOG i thought, hey, here's a perfect opportunity to enjoy it all over again.
then i got to the first flak cannon mission. i thought "oh yeah, i remember this. who thought THIS was a good idea?" but passed it without too much trouble and went on my way. unfortunately i had forgotten the SECOND flak mission. now that im there, i remember nearly throwing the game away in frustration... and after trying unsuccessfully to pass it for two hours, im at the same point.
anyone have any tips or know of any cheats to make this absolutely miserable mission go away? whoever's idea it was to include these in an otherwise excellent space shooter should be flogged. mercilessly. for days on end.
hehehe, I can remember that the Ascaran Community manager finished the 2nd flak mission for hundreds of players.
There is a trainer on www.cheatshappens.com thats sets the flak to indestructable, or you can skip the mission completely. Though i think you need to be premium member to download it.
if you still have trouble let me know. I'll do the mission for you then :)
i finally got past it after about 3 hours.
id seriously like to know who the hell at ascaron thought those missions were a good idea. if we ever see a sequel, i hope they learn something from the first one and leave the arcade bs out...

I thought I'd help everyone out with this:

Here you can download videos of the flak missions being done. I tried twice to complete it, and went looking for a guide; finding these. Two attempts later I had managed to pass the second one without any trouble.
I agree they're hella tough, but it just takes a little practice!
The MesaMod for the game includes "fixes" that make the flak missions easier, as well as few other cheats like more starting money, faster recharge on shield and generators, cheaper ship upgrades so you can actually get a 10-10-10 ship, etc.

Yeah but that's dull, plus it doesn't help while half way through the game.
Sure it does:
1. Apply the mod and quit out of DSO
2. Copy the save files from the standard game to the mod's save directory
3. Run the game and load your save
Now you can do the easier flak mission. If you don't want the additional "benefits" of the mod, after completing the flak mission, reverse the process and go back to playing the standard game.
I still don't think you need it, the flak missions are achievable; you just have to watch the videos and have a few goes. Hell, I'm hardly 1337 and I did it in 4 goes.
Of course you don't "need" it, it's simply an alternative to banging your head against that wall unnecessarily if you don't want to. Either way, the result is the same: you get past the overly annoying flak mission, which is all the OP (and I'm sure many others) wanted to do.
Do people really have that much trouble with the flak missions? I completed the first one first time, and the second one on a second attempt (just barely). Just try and remember what order the drones appears on your radar and hit the oldest ones first.
As someone mentioned elsewhere, the Flak missions can be harder if you upgrade your ship too much (I made a small mod just to be able to upgrade my ship to lvl 30 by the end of the game). What seems to happen is that, if you upgrade your ship too much, the Flak doesn't have strong enough armor to handle the larger number of enemy wings that come at it (in Flak mission 1, I've read people say there are 4-6 enemy wings, I ended up with almost a dozen to deal with).

As for the Mesa mod's fix for the Flak missions, you can install the mod, but don't need to do all that saved-game moving.

After the game is saved, quit DSO, then run the batch file in your DSO directory (the one in Program Files (x86)), play out the Flak mission, save the game, quit DSO, and run the batch file again to put things back to normal (don't forget to do this as it affects every enemy battle, and could break the game outside the Flak missions).

All this does is reduce the enemy wings from 2-5 ships to 1 ship per wing.

Hope this helps.

could it be possible for someone to send the flak edition of the trainer version 1.3 to me?

cheathapens needs to learn that not all of us can afford to cough up the dough to play with their latest version toys
i agree, send me the damn flak 2 cheat, its not a damn arcade game its strategy and flak mission 2 does not equate to such a game, I am not into arcade games and this is such a sample. c heat happens is just a con to get your money, no thanks.
